For Turismo, artists Leandro Erlich and Judi Werthein created a photographic setting of an unreachable Austrian Alps landscape, which they transported from their Brooklyn studios to Cuba, installing it in La Cabana, a historic fortress dating back to the colonial period that in later times was used for other purposes, such as the residence of Fulgencio Batista, a jail, and, after the 1959 revolution, the headquarters of the Comandancia, led by Che Guevara. The alpine backdrop was set up with artificial snow, skis, sleds, and other accompanying decorative items to help create a magical illusion and fantasized imaginary situation for Cuban residents, who were invited to come, pose, and have their picture taken in front of the backdrop. Turismo was undertaken for the seventh Bienal de la Habana in Cuba.

Since its emergence in the 1980s and 90s, the Daros Collection in Zurich has accumulated about 280 works by 30 outstanding North American and European artists. In 2000, when the strength and integrity of this collection had been established, the museum boldly struck off in a new direction, and the Daros Latin America Collection was founded. Already comprising roughly 1,000 works by around 100 artists including Carlos Amorales, José Bedia, Alfredo Jaar, Gego, Guillermo Kuitca, Vik Muniz, among others, it is now the largest collection of Latin American art in Europe--an exciting new resource that will doubtless have interesting long-term ramifications for contemporary European art. Face to Face is the first volume to bring the two Daros Collections together, thereby engaging these works--created in different media and of various cultural origin--in a dynamic dialogue that disrupts ordinary canon-oriented perspectives. Face to Face thus not only deepens our knowledge of the respective qualities of the two collections, but also explores the common characteristics of their cultural backgrounds.

Beginning with staged portraits and self-portraits, John Brill's imagery becomes increasingly nebulous, increasingly concerned with how resonance can remain unaffected by the systematic removal of content. Taking scavenged pictures, some from real life and some from off the television screen, Brill works to distance the image from its origin through multiple printings, fragmentation, tonal shifts, and value reversals. In the end, the pictures derive more from mind than from matter, projections of Brill's own will, contrived of his own desire. John Brill was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1951. With a degree in physiological psychology, Brill steeped himself in the scientific method--the practice of discriminating fact from hypothesis--before committing himself in 1981 to art making. Since then, he has shown in galleries in New York, Atlanta, and Hoboken.
