Marking the beginning of a new series of high quality books on contemporary New Zealand artists from Te Papa Press, Judy Darragh: So... you made it? is published to coincide with a major exhibition at Te Papa. This is the first book to present a substantial overview of the work of Judy Darragh, one of New Zealand's best regarded contemporary sculpture and installation artists, in the context of her current practice. The exhibition is the first retrospective of her work, and the first major project for Darragh in a public gallery. There are new and recent works that range from provocative experiments with twink and posters, to beautiful fusions of art and the everyday in metallic beaded curtains, synthetic colour, stickers in flawless geometry. Including an in-depth interview with Darragh, Judy Darragh: So...you made it? is an opportunity to engage in the diversity of contemporary practice through the review of an artist in mid flight of 'making and making it!'

Teststrip written by Judy Darragh and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Art, Modern categories.

This book presents a history of this killer artist-run space in the form of an archive of ephemera and photographs. If you were there, you won't remember... "In 1992 eight artists (a mix of recent graduates and more experienced artists) frustrated with the lack of exhibiting opportunities from public art institutions and dealer galleries took on the lease of a modest floor at 10 Vulcan Lane in the heart of Auckland's CBD and opened Teststrip gallery with a group show of their work. The collective followed this with a series of solo shows and short-run publications. Encouraged by the response, they resolved to extend the program by inviting other artists to exhibit in exchange for a nominal fee to help pay the rent. At the end of 1994, due to the growing gentrification of the CBD, Teststrip was forced to move to a new building at 454 Karangahape Road, Newton, which gave the opportunity for the collective to reconsider operations. With funding from Creative New Zealand the group upgraded the two-gallery space, formalised their publication series, the Teststrip micrographs, employed an administrator and worked with a designer to develop a graphic identity. Teststrip broadened the kinds of projects they undertook, in particular working with Australian artists and curators and holding a series of shows by Los Angeles artists. In their final year the collective strengthened their connection to the wider arts community with the inclusion of music, theatre events and exhibitions of work in jewellery and ceramics. These events, projects, installations, screenings and performances were documented and this publication is an extension and consolidation of the aims and values of Teststrip. The Teststrip gallery model has influenced subsequent artist-run galleries around New Zealand, and several members are still part of these collectives."

Things I Learned At Art School written by Megan Dunn and has been published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-17 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Part memoir, part essay collection, Megan Dunn’s ingenious, moving, hilariously personal Things I Learned at Art School tells the story of her early life and coming-of-age in New Zealand in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. From her parents’ divorce to her Smurf collection, from the mean girls at school to the mermaid movie Splash!, from her work in strip clubs and massage parlours (and one steak restaurant) to the art school of the title, this is a dazzling, killer read from a contemporary voice of comic brilliance. Chapters include: The Ballad of Western Barbie; A Comprehensive List of All the Girls Who Teased Me at Western Heights High School, What They Looked Like and Why They Did It; On Being a Redhead; Life Begins at Forty: That Time My Uncle Killed Himself; Good Girls Write Memoirs, Bad Girls Don’t Have Time; Videos I Watched with My Father; Things I Learned at Art School; CV of a Fat Waitress; Nine Months in a Massage Parlour Called Belle de Jour; Various Uses for a Low Self-esteem; Art in the Waiting Room and Submerging Artist. Praise for Tinderbox: “Tinderbox is deadpan hilarious and Megan Dunn is a comic genius.” - Susanna Andrew, Metro “Megan Dunn's wry, whip-smart memoir about Fahrenheit 451, literary ambition & the last days of Borders Bookstores is funny & insightful as hell. Like Kathy Acker meets Sue Townsend. The read of the summer! ... already one of my favourite New Zealand books.” - Hera Lindsay Bird “Witty, highly entertaining.” - Philip Matthews, Stuff "Tinderbox is such a shape-shifter, such a sui generis work, that to call it a memoir does it a disservice ... [Dunn’s] voice is hard to resist – sardonic, brazen, sagacious – recalling, in places, Nora Ephron, John Jeremiah Sullivan, and Maggie Nelson.” - James Cook, Review 31

Px written by Jan P. Bryant and has been published by RAM Publications & Distribution Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Painting, Modern categories.

This book functions both as a theoretical study of painting practice - essays by Jan Bryant and Leonhard Emmerling disagreeing about the supposed purpose or operation of contemporary painting - and an exhibition catalogue, illustrating in full the wide variety of practices that made up a show of the work of painters (in the widest sense) from New Zealand, Europe and the US. PX: Thoughts on Painting was published following the two-part PX exhibition at St Paul Street Gallery, AUT University, Auckland - A Purposeless Production: A Necessary Praxis, curated by Leonhard Emmerling, and Snow Falls on Mountains Without Wind, curated by Jan Bryant - featuring the work of the following artists: Whitney Bedford, Richard Bryant, Amelia Harris, Dil Hildebrand, Colin Lawson, Saskia Leek, Patrick Lundberg, Michel Majerus, Fiona Macdonald, Isobel Thom, Barbara Tuck, Genevieve Allison, Guy Benfield, James Cousins, Simon Glaister, Kerstin Gottschalk, Katharina Grosse, Simon Ingram, Imi Knoebel, Tumi Magnusson, Paul McCarthy, Judy Millar, Ben Morieson, Gerhard Richter, Nedko Solakov.
