So wird zuvorderst nach der Einleitung ein Ordnungsversuch unternommen, um die Begriffe Jugend und Identität einordnen zu können. Der Begriff der Jugend wird anhand der Modelle von Havighurst und Erikson eingeleitet, um anschließend auf die jugendspezifischen Eigenheiten und Veränderungen einzugehen. Im Folgenden wird das Konstrukt der Identität beleuchtet werden: Nach einem kurzen geschichtlichen Abriss wird auf die zentralen Bereiche der Identität eingegangen. Als solche zu nennen sind Gleichheit und Kontinuität, das Selbst als Objekt, das Individuum als Teil der Gesellschaft und Geschichte und die Unterscheidung in personale und soziale Identität sowie in aktuelles, ideales und normatives Selbst. Hiernach wird anhand der Konzepte von Erikson und Marcia die Prozesse der Identitätsentwicklung nachgezeichnet, bevor mit Heiner Keupps „Patchwork der Identitäten“ ein Blick in die Identitätstheorie der Spätmoderne geworfen wird. Nach einem kurzen Überblick über Mediensozialisation und Social Web sowie über Statistiken zur Nutzung des Social Web erfolgt im vorletzten Abschnitt die Synthese der Gedanken zum Einfluss des Social Web auf die Identitätsarbeit von Jugendlichen.

Many theories--from the routine to the bizarre--have been offered up to explain the crime decline of the 1990s. Was it record levels of imprisonment? An abatement of the crack cocaine epidemic? More police using better tactics? Or even the effects of legalized abortion? And what can we expect from crime rates in the future? Franklin E. Zimring here takes on the experts, and counters with the first in-depth portrait of the decline and its true significance. The major lesson from the 1990s is that relatively superficial changes in the character of urban life can be associated with up to 75% drops in the crime rate. Crime can drop even if there is no major change in the population, the economy or the schools. Offering the most reliable data available, Zimring documents the decline as the longest and largest since World War II. It ranges across both violent and non-violent offenses, all regions, and every demographic. All Americans, whether they live in cities or suburbs, whether rich or poor, are safer today. Casting a critical and unerring eye on current explanations, this book demonstrates that both long-standing theories of crime prevention and recently generated theories fall far short of explaining the 1990s drop. A careful study of Canadian crime trends reveals that imprisonment and economic factors may not have played the role in the U.S. crime drop that many have suggested. There was no magic bullet but instead a combination of factors working in concert rather than a single cause that produced the decline. Further--and happily for future progress, it is clear that declines in the crime rate do not require fundamental social or structural changes. Smaller shifts in policy can make large differences. The significant reductions in crime rates, especially in New York, where crime dropped twice the national average, suggests that there is room for other cities to repeat this astounding success. In this definitive look at the great American crime decline, Franklin E. Zimring finds no pat answers but evidence that even lower crime rates might be in store.

How is it that cultures come into existence at all? How do cultures develop particular customs and characteristics rather than others? How do cultures persist and change over time? Most previous attempts to address these questions have been descriptive and historical. The purpose of this book is to provide answers that are explanatory, predictive, and relevant to the emergence and continuing evolution of cultures past, present, and future. Most other investigations into "cultural psychology" have focused on the impact that culture has on the psychology of the individual. The focus of this book is the reverse. The authors show how questions about the origins and evolution of culture can be fruitfully answered through rigorous and creative examination of fundamental characteristics of human cognition, motivation, and social interaction. They review recent theory and research that, in many different ways, points to the influence of basic psychological processes on the collective structures that define cultures. These processes operate in all sorts of different populations, ranging from very small interacting groups to grand-scale masses of people occupying the same demographic or geographic category. The cultural effects--often unintended--of individuals' thoughts and actions are demonstrated in a wide variety of customs, ritualized practices, and shared mythologies: for example, religious beliefs, moral standards, rules for the allocation of resources, norms for the acceptable expression of aggression, gender stereotypes, and scientific values. The Psychological Foundations of Culture reveals that the consequences of psychological processes resonate well beyond the disciplinary constraints of psychology. By taking a psychological approach to questions usually addressed by anthropologists, sociologists, and other social scientists, it suggests that psychological research into the foundations of culture is a useful--perhaps even necessary--complement to other forms of inquiry.
