From 1945 to 1989, relations between the communist East German state and the Catholic Church were contentious and sometimes turbulent. Drawing on extensive Stasi materials and other government and party archives, this study provides the first systematic overview of this complex relationship and offers many new insights into the continuities, changes, and entanglements of policies and strategies on both sides. Previously undiscovered records in church archives contribute to an analysis of regional and sectoral conflicts within the Church and various shades of cooperation between nominal antagonists. The volume also explores relations between the GDR and the Vatican and addresses the oft-neglected communist “church business” controversially made in exchange for hard Western currency.

This analysis of the relationship between science and totalitarian rule in one of the most technically advanced countries in the East bloc examines professional autonomy under dictatorship and the place of technology in Communist ideology. In Cold War-era East Germany, the German tradition of science-based technology merged with a socialist system that made technological progress central to its ideology. Technology became an important part of East German socialist identity--crucial to how Communists saw their system and how citizens saw their state. In Red Prometheus, Dolores Augustine examines the relationship between a dictatorial system and the scientific and engineering communities in East Germany from the end of the Second World War through the 1980s. Drawing on newly opened archives and extensive interviews, Augustine looks in detail at individual scientists' interactions with the East German system, examining the effectiveness of their resistance against the party's totalitarian impulses. She explains why many German scientists and engineers who were deported to the Soviet Union after World War II returned to East Germany rather than defecting to the capitalist West, traces scientists' attempts to hold on to some aspects of professional autonomy, and describes challenges to their professional identity on the factory floor. Augustine examines the quality of science and technology produced under Communist rule, looking at failed research projects and clashing cultures of innovation. She looks at technological myth-building in science fiction and propaganda. She explores individual career strategies, including the role played by gender in high-tech professions, and the ways that both enterprises and individuals responded to increasing state and party control of research during the 1980s. We cannot understand the economic choices made by East Germany, Augustine argues, unless we understand the cultural values reflected in the East German belief in technology as indispensable to progress and industrial development.

Che cosa pensano sulle tematiche della migrazione e dell'inclusione? Ragazzi e ragazze dai 14 ai 16 anni di tutti i distretti delle tre regioni forniscono informazioni su queste e altre domande in un rilevante studio condotto dalla Pädagogische Hochschule del Tirolo e dalla Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule Edith Stein. La fase di rilevamento dei dati coincide con la pandemia da COVID19 in Europa e con le restrizioni in corso, i cambiamenti e le successive discussioni. La vita quotidiana dei giovani è mutata notevolmente proprio in questo periodo di tempo.

Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Endlich erwachsen zu werden und die Kindheit hinter sich zu lassen, stellt seit jeher für viele Heranwachsende erstrebenswertes Ziel und innig gehegten Wunsch gleichermaßen dar. Es gilt, gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz und Handlungsfähigkeit zu erlangen und von der Umwelt als mündiger Bürger wahrgenommen zu werden. Die Jugendweihe will die Schüler der achten Klasse inhaltlich und feierlich auf diesem Weg in das Erwachsenenleben begleiten. Sie gilt vor allem im Osten Deutschlands und neben der kirchlichen Konfirmation als gesellschaftlicher Ritus, der diesen Übergang vom Jugend- zum Erwachsenenalter markieren soll. Die vorliegende Arbeit will untersuchen, welche Gültigkeit diesem Ritual heute noch zukommt und wie das Verhältnis zwischen den Ambitionen der Jugendweiheanbieter und der erlebten Realität der Teilnehmer zu sehen ist. Dabei soll es vor allem um die Frage gehen, ob und welche Ansprüche der Vermittlung von Werten und Erlebnissen sich die durchführenden Vereine gestellt haben und wie diese in der Praxis umgesetzt werden. Im Gegensatz dazu soll untersucht werden, wie Jugendliche an der Schwelle zum Erwachsenwerden die Bedeutsamkeit der Jugendweihe einschätzen und was oder wer sie zur Teilnahme bewegt. Um der Komplexität des Themas gerecht zu werden, besteht diese Arbeit aus den folgenden vier Teilen: Teil I beleuchtet kurz die historischen Hintergründe und die Geschichte der Jugendweihe sowie ihr Verhältnis zur kirchlichen Konfirmation. Teil II stellt zwei Jugendweiheanbieter aus Dresden näher vor und beschreibt deren Ansprüche an die Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Jugendweihe. Teil III beschäftigt sich mit den Methoden zur Untersuchung der Jugendweihe und der damit verbundenen Datenerhebung. Teil IV befasst sich mit der Auswertung der Daten und interpretiert das Ergebnis in Bezug auf die Vorbetrachtungen.
