Mitte der 90er glaubten die öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten mit der Einführung junger Radioprogramme die Wunderwaffe zur Sicherung ihres Hörernachwuchses gefunden zu haben. Erfolgreich eroberten sowohl die Sender des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks als auch private Programme den Markt der jungen Hörer. Heute verliert die Innovation von damals ihre Bedeutung für den jugendlichen Radiohörer. Gegenüber der Konkurrenz sieht das Jugendradio derzeit alt aus. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit stehen die Wettbewerbssituation und zukünftige Entwicklung des Jugendradios. Von diesen Erkenntnissen ausgehend werden strategische Ansätze zur Repositionierung des Jugendradios vorgestellt und entwickelt, sowie eine Einschätzung über die Zukunftsfähigkeit des Jugendradios vorgenommen. Um die gegenwärtige Situation des Jugendradiomarktes beurteilen zu können, nähert sich diese Arbeit zunächst dem Begriff des Jugendradios und hebt seine primären Merkmale hervor. Zusätzlich müssen die institutionellen und technischen Rahmenbedingungen für den öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk und die privaten Sender herangezogen werden, um die unterschiedlichen Vorraussetzungen und Bedingungen für die jeweiligen Jugendsender im Jugendradiomarkt zu verdeutlichen. Empirische Daten zu den Verlusten bei Reichweiten und zum Rückgang der Hörfunknutzung belegen erste Krisensymptome. Der darauf folgende Teil widmet sich den Ursachen, die möglicherweise zu diesen Entwicklungen beigetragen haben. Hierbei werden technologische Konkurrenten, die demographische Entwicklung der Zielgruppen sowie der Wettbewerb innerhalb des Mediums Radio dargestellt und analysiert. Anschließend werden strategische Ansätze zur Repositionierung des Jugendradios vorgestellt und diskutiert, die darauf abzielen für ein jugendliches Publikum wieder an Attraktivität zu gewinnen. Beispielhaft erfolgt eine Betrachtung kürzlich durchgeführter Maßnahmen ausgewählter Jugendsender. Die abschließende Zusammenfassung bewertet die Maßnahmen der Jugendprogramme sowie die aktuelle Situation des Marktes und diskutiert die Entwicklungstendenzen des Jugendradiomarktes in einem Ausblick.
