Hasta fechas muy recientes, ninguna de las imágenes recurrentes sobre lo que es femenino ha mostrado a una mujer administrando justicia o enseñando leyes, a pesar de que una mujer con los ojos vedados sea una de las representaciones más extendidas de la justicia en la cultura grecolatina. Tanto las ciencias como las artes, los saberes teóricos como los prácticos muestran formas variadas y contradictorias de ser mujer: en la vertiente positiva, aparecen como vírgenes indefensas, princesas delicadas, bellezas inspiradoras o ángeles del hogar consagradas al cuidado de la familia, complementando así las funciones de gobierno y liderazgo que se atribuye a los hombres; en la vertiente negativa, surgen como arpías o vampiresas manipuladoras de los hombres que las aman o como madres depravadas que maltratan y asesinan a su prole indefensa; surgen, en fin, como monstruos que pervierten el orden natural según su diseño tradicional. No extraña entonces que, más allá de esa imagen alegórica de la justicia, lo normal es que, ante el Derecho, las mujeres aparezcan como víctimas o victimarias, pero no administrando justicia, enseñando leyes, actuando como acusadoras o defensoras en tribunales o representando intereses de particulares o instituciones públicas en el foro. Los trabajos que se reúnen en este libro analizan la presencia reciente de las mujeres en el ejercicio de las profesiones jurídicas, un ámbito tradicionalmente masculino, y cómo tal presencia se encuentra ligada a cambios en la percepción social de sus competencias y funciones así como en los sistemas normativos que la mantienen. Estos trabajos evidencian, desde diversas disciplinas y metodologías y haciendo referencia a distintas geografías, la historia común y también los pormenores de una ausencia injustificable, que todavía hoy enfrenta prejuicios atávicos, especialmente cuando las mujeres tratan de acceder a los escalafones más altos o al gobierno de las profesiones jurídicas.
