Die Abenteuer- und Entdeckerromane des französischen Schriftstellers Jules Verne (1828-1905) werden bis heute viel gelesen und wurden oft verfilmt. In Büchern wie "Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde", "20000 Meilen unter dem Meer" und "Reise zum Mond" nimmt er zahlreiche technische Entwicklungen vorweg. Verne selbst ist viel gereist. Dabei durchquerte er im Juni des Jahres 1881 mit seiner Dampfyacht auch Schleswig-Holstein. Sein Bruder Paul, der an dieser Reise von Frankreich nach Kopenhagen teilnahm, schrieb einen Bericht über diesen Törn. Dabei bilden die Schilderungen der Passage von der Nord- in die Ostsee durch die Eider und den alten Eiderkanal, dazumal eine bestaunte Ingenieurleistung, sowie die Aufenthalte in Tönning, Rendsburg und Kiel einen besonderen Schwerpunkt. Zum 100. Todestag Jules Vernes im März 2005 hat Frank Trende den Reisebericht wieder entdeckt und in einem Nachwort Hintergründe zu Jules Verne, zum alten Eiderkanal und zu der literarischen Folgewirkung der Reise Vernes bei Arno Schmidt (1914-1979) beigesteuert. Der norddeutsche Landschaftsfotograf Günter Pump ist auf den Spuren von Jules Verne gereist und hat die bis heute spürbare Poesie der Reiseroute durch Schleswig-Holstein in ausdrucksstarken Aufnahmen nachempfunden. Frank Trende, Jahrgang 1963, ist Autor zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen zur schleswig-holsteinischen Landeskunde und Kultur- und Literatur-geschichte.
