Early in his career, as he grappled with the idea of becoming an artist, Vincent van Gogh attempted portraiture, possibly with a mission in the religious sense. His models were impoverished miners, weavers and peasants. Later, his great achievement was in still life, landscape painting and further portraits all closely related to the places where he lived. He moved from place to place, from his parents' vicarage to the homes of impoverished peasants, from seaside Ramsgate, and landmarks in London to the heights of Montmartre, from the famous Yellow House in Arles to hospital then a nearby asylum. Finally, he wandered the fields and streets of Auvers, near Paris. Wherever he lived, he drew and painted. As well as the places where he stayed, he painted the homes of others, and monuments that attracted him, such as churches or even suburban factories. These became the subject of an alternative kind of portraiture - one that did not involve people. His developing, emphatic and highly individual style suited the different character of the buildings he so carefully recorded. Each place, about which he also wrote at length, provides us with a solid framework with which to follow and understand him. Van Gogh's life will be revealed not only through the included illustrations of his art, but with much quotation from letters. The book hopes to answer the questions: Why was he there? what and who else were there? How did his vision suit the place - or vice versa?

The incarnation of the myth of a cursed artist, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is a legend who became a reference for modern art. An Expressionist during the Post-Impressionist movement, his art was misunderstood during his lifetime. In Holland, he partook in the Dutch realist painting movement by studying peasant characters. Anxious and depressed, Vincent van Gogh produced more than 2000 artworks, yet sold only one in his lifetime. A self-made artist, his work is known for its rough and emotional beauty and is amongst the most popular in the art market today.

Rejected in their day by painters, critics, and collectors, the visions of Vincent Van Gogh now rank among the most beloved and influential works in the history of Western art. The artist sold only a single painting in his lifetime, despite an abundant oeuvre of more than 2,000 artworks. Today his paintings fetch tens of millions at auction, and visitors from around the world flock to Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum. The artist's life of grinding poverty, his severe mental illness, and the derision of his contemporaries combined to form a romantic ideal of the tortured artist. Twenty-three years after Van Gogh's suicide, in the wake of his slowly growing fame, the painter's sister published this memoir. An intimate view of the artist's life, art, and philosophy, the book is illustrated with reproductions of several of Van Gogh's most characteristic works, including portraits and landscapes.

Contemporary research and museum websites worldwide have shed new light on Vincent van Gogh's formative years in Paris. Nicholas Vazzana has blended history and fiction to show the profound transformation of one of the world's great artists during his two-year stay in Paris' Montmartre quarter. The thirty-three-year-old Dutchman's painting style, formerly rooted in the gray, cold north, evolves into an unrestrained, colorful brilliance under Parisian influences. In addition to changing his painting style, Van Gogh grows as a social being, mingling with prominent artists and lively bohemians in the city's cafés and bistros, where he exchanges dialogue with such notables as Henri Toulouse Lautrec and Emile Zola. But his turbulent love affair with Agostina Segatori, the owner of Cafe du Tambourin, changes Van Gogh's view of love and leads to a violent, dangerous confrontation. Van Gogh in Paris intimately reveals Van Gogh's "lost years," when he was [or is] seduced by sensual decadence, unbridled sexual freedom, and absinthe, known as the green fairy. As a professional artist, Vazzana incorporates his knowledge of the masters into his novel, adding texture and passion to Van Gogh's fascinating life.

Van Gogh S Ear written by Bernadette Murphy and has been published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-12 with Art categories.

The best-known and most sensational event in Vincent van Gogh’s life is also the least understood. For more than a century, biographers and historians seeking definitive facts about what happened on a December night in Arles have unearthed more questions than answers. Why would an artist at the height of his powers commit such a brutal act? Who was the mysterious “Rachel” to whom he presented his macabre gift? Did he use a razor or a knife? Was it just a segment—or did Van Gogh really lop off his entire ear? In Van Gogh’s Ear, Bernadette Murphy reveals, for the first time, the true story of this long-misunderstood incident, sweeping away decades of myth and giving us a glimpse of a troubled but brilliant artist at his breaking point. Murphy’s detective work takes her from Europe to the United States and back, from the holdings of major museums to the moldering contents of forgotten archives. She braids together her own thrilling journey of discovery with a narrative of Van Gogh’s life in Arles, the sleepy Provençal town where he created his finest work, and vividly reconstructs the world in which he moved—the madams and prostitutes, café patrons and police inspectors, shepherds and bohemian artists. We encounter Van Gogh’s brother and benefactor Theo, his guest and fellow painter Paul Gauguin, and many local subjects of Van Gogh’s paintings, some of whom Murphy identifies for the first time. Strikingly, Murphy uncovers previously unknown information about “Rachel”—and uses it to propose a bold new hypothesis about what was occurring in Van Gogh’s heart and mind as he made a mysterious delivery to her doorstep. As it reopens one of art history’s most famous cold cases, Van Gogh’s Ear becomes a fascinating work of detection. It is also a study of a painter creating his most iconic and revolutionary work, pushing himself ever closer to greatness even as he edged toward madness—and one fateful sweep of the blade that would resonate through the ages.
