Ein wichtiger Teil des Materials ging nach Klaproths Tod an die Petersburger Akademie und ist von der Forschung bisher kaum herangezogen worden. Uvarov, der Sinologe und Germanist Heinrich Kurz, der Erfinder und Drucker Paul Schilling von Canstadt, der Sinologe Stanislas Julien, der Petersburger Orientalist Christian Daniel Frahn, der Japanforscher Philipp Franz von Siebold, der Geograph Karl Ritter, der Historiker Karl Friedrich Neumann, Alexander von Humboldt usw. Der Briefwechsel mit dem Sekretar der Akademie gibt Details uber Klaproths Auftragsreisen. Der vorliegende Band umfaßt hauptsächlich Briefe des vielseitigen Berliner Orientalisten Julius Klaproth (1783-1835), dessen Interessengebiete China, Japan und Zentralasien, aber auch die ägyptischen Hieroglyphen, der Kaukasus, den er mit einem kaiserlichen Forschungsauftrag bereist hatte, Kartographie und Typographie waren, an Schilling von Canstadt. Sein Schriftenverzeichnis zählt über 400 Nummern, dazu etwa 50 gedruckte Karten. Zusammen mit seinem Freund Jean Pierre Abel Rémusat (1788-1832), dem ersten Ordinarius für Sinologie in Europa, gehört er zu den Gründervätern der modernen kritischen Chinawissenschaften. Der Kontakt zu dem Techniker und Erfinder Schilling von Canstadt (1786-1837) war für Klaproth besonders wichtig, nicht etwa weil er ebenfalls an technischen Fragen arbeitete, sondern weil Schilling ein Pionier im Drucken orientalischer Schriften war, worin er es zu einer seltenen Meisterschaft brachte - er druckte Chinesisch, Mandschu, Mongolisch und Tibetisch sowie Uigurisch; dabei stützte er sich auf seine eigene exzellente orientalische Bibliothek, damals wohl die beste in Europa. 1817 beauftragte der Kaiser ihn mit der Leitung einer neu errichteten lithographischen Werkstatt beim Außenministerium. Klaproth war sowohl von den Drucken wie auch von der Bibliothek fasziniert, und so ergab sich eine teils sehr rege Zusammenarbeit, die sich in den Briefen spiegelt. Allerdings haben sich Schillings Schreiben an Klaproth nicht erhalten. Im Anhang bietet der Band eine Edition von Klaproths offenen Briefen an einen Sinologus Berolinensis, der sich als der in Berlin tätige italienische Sprachlehrer Antonio Montucci (1762-1829) entpuppte, der mit großer Beharrlichkeit das Ziel eines europäischen Wörterbuches verfolgte, wofür er über 20000 Typen schneiden ließ. Des weiteren bringt der Anhang eine Ergänzung von etwa hundert Nummern zu dem vor 20 Jahren veröffentlichten Schriftenverzeichnis von Julius Klaproth. Mit Register.

Byzantine intellectuals not only had direct access to Neoplatonic sources in the original language but also, at times, showed a particular interest in them. During the Early Byzantine period Platonism significantly contributed to the development of Christian doctrines and, paradoxically, remained a rival world view that was perceived by many Christian thinkers as a serious threat to their own intellectual identity. This problematic relationship was to become even more complex during the following centuries. Byzantine authors made numerous attempts to harmonize Neoplatonic doctrines with Christianity as well as to criticize, refute and even condemn them. The papers assembled in this volume discuss a number of specific questions and concerns that drew the interest of Byzantine scholars in different periods towards Neoplatonic sources in an attempt to identify and explore the central issues in the reception of Neoplatonic texts during the Byzantine era. This is the first volume of the sub-series "Byzantinisches Archiv - Series Philosophica", which will be dedicated to the rapidly growing field of research in Byzantine philosophical texts.
