Julius Meier-Graefe (1867-1935) entwickelte sich vom Berliner Bohemien zu einem wichtigen Kunstschriftsteller. 1895 gründete er mit Otto Julius Bierbaum in Berlin die Zeitschrift "PAN" und zog kurz darauf nach Paris, wo er sich für ein modernes Kunstgewerbe einsetzte. Die "Entwicklungsgeschichte der modernen Kunst" (1904) war sein Debüt als Kunstschriftsteller. Er war ein umstrittener Akteur im Kunstleben vor und nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Das unmittelbare Erlebnis der Kunst war für ihn ausschlaggebend. Darüber hinaus machte er mit Nachdruck auf die prekäre Lage der Kunst aufmerksam. Zu seinen wichtigsten Werken zählte die "Spanische Reise" (1910), ein Reisebuch, in dem die Kunst im Mittelpunkt steht, "Der Tscheinik" (1918), ein Buch über seine russische Gefangenschaft, ein bedeutendes Werk über Dostojewski (1926) sowie "Der Vater" (1932), ein autobiographischer Roman. Die Biographie von Catherine Krahmer lässt den Autor mit zahlreichen Zitaten selbst zu Wort kommen und zeichnet ein facettenreiches Bild einer wichtigen Figur der europäischen Kunstszene des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts.
