Die Bemühungen des Berliner Verlegers J ulius Springer (1817-1877) um das Werk des Schweizer Dichters Jere mias Gotthelf (1797-1854) erstrecken sich zunächst über die Jahre der gemeinsamen Zusammenarbeit von 1843 bis 1854 und werden dann mit der Witwe des Dichters Hen riette Bitzius-Zeender (1805-1872), dem Sohn Albert Bitzius (1835-1882) und dem Schwiegersohn Albert von Rütte (1825-1902) fortgesetzt. Obwohl die Briefe Gotthelfs an Springer bis auf fünf als verloren gelten müssen, ergeben die über hundert Briefe Springers an Gotthelf samt ihrem faßbaren Umfeld ein ganzes Kapitel deutsch-schweizerischer Literaturge schichte und Kulturbeziehungen. Überdies ist in ihnen ein Stück deutscher Buchhandelsgeschichte enthalten, die noch auf ihre gründliche Erforschung wartet. Und schließlich sind sie für die Biographie Julius Springers und die Anfange des Springer-Verlags, der in diesem Jahr (1992) auf eine 150jährige Verlagsgeschichte zurückblik ken kann, sehr ergiebig. Eine Vollständigkeit erstrebende Dokumentation der Beziehung von Gotthelf und Springer ergäbe einen Band von 500 oder mehr Seiten, würde vermutlich den heuti gen Leser eher abschrecken als anziehen -und ihm damit ein reizvolles, ja spannendes Kapitel über Autoren und Verleger im 19. Jahrhundert vorenthalten. Der rege Brief-, Manuskript-, Druckbogen-und Geldverkehr zwi schen Berlin und Lützelflüh, dem Verlags- und dem Pfarrhaus, der Hauptstadt Preußens und dem Emmenta ler Bauerndorf mit 3600 Seelen - das hat etwas Grenz überschreitendes, Gesamteuropäisches, Weltbürgerlich Urbanes an sich.

An - tempt was made in the translation to keep the flavour of the original language and not contemporise it.

With a great appreciation of history, Heinz Sarkowski has impressively reconstructed the company cor- spondence, which is fortunately almost completely preserved, and made it speak. * There is an inexhaustible amount of c- respondence pertaining to the period I have taken it upon myself to cover, and working through it properly not only would have required many years, but also would have detracted from the immediacy of the account. Thus, I decided to proceed from personal experience, to describe what has happened and to provide details gleaned from the correspondence. I have - counted here by no means only my own, but rather the personal experiences of the many company members and employees who are mentioned below. With the founding of the New York firm, developments branch out, becoming parallel but separate, and the change from one scene to another repeatedly interrupts the continuing course of events and the chronological flow of the report. In this connection, the occasional repetition of certain facts was - avoidable. In some places, however, it seemed more appropriate not to interrupt particular lines of development, but to describe them in continuity without regard to specific periods of time.

Marie Springer (1826 - 1907) schildert in ihren Erinnerungen das Leben an der Seite ihres Mannes von der Gründung des Unternehmens in der Berliner Breiten Straße im Jahre 1842 bis zum Tod von Julius Springer 1877. Berichtet wird vom aufmüpfigen jungen Buchhändler, der gegen die Preßgesetze revoltiert und deshalb zu drei Monaten Festungshaft verurteilt wird, vom Bürger, der während der 48er Revolution Abgeordneter im Berliner Stadtrat ist. Wir erfahren Details aus dem Leben eines Buchhändlers, der sein Sortiment zur Blüte bringt und in zäher Arbeit einen beachteten Verlag aufbaut. Das Leben in der Familie ist lebhaft, der Kreis buchhändlerischer Kollegen und liberaler Parteifreunde groß. Neben dem Aufbau eines vielseitigen Verlags bleibt Springer stets auch die Zeit für ausgedehnte Urlaubsreisen in die Schweiz und zu Aufenthalten in den Kurorten Mitteldeutschlands. Höhepunkte dieses aktiv geführten Lebens sind die Jahre im Berliner Stadtrat (1867 - 1877), zuletzt als Stellvertreter des Vorstehers, und die zweimalige Amtszeit als Erster Vorsteher des Börsenvereins der deutschen Buchhändler (1867 - 1873). - Ausführliche Anmerkungen und ein Personenregister erschließen dieses sehr persönliche Lebensdokument. Zum ersten Mal wird ein Brief Springers mit einem ausführlichen Bericht über seinen Besuch bei Jeremias Gotthelf abgedruckt. Diese Lebensskizze wurde ediert aus dem Anlaß des 65. Geburtstags von Konrad F. Springer, einem Urenkel des Verlagsgründers.
