In the attempt to synthesize Jung and Swedenborg, Dr. James made the discovery that the "psychic world" of Jung and the "spiritual world" of Swedenborg refer to the same world. He then came to the conclusion that the psychic world and the spiritual world are the same world as the "mental world" in which we all live as human beings. There is only one mental world and all human beings are born into it. Since there is no physical time or space in the mental world it is called the mental world of eternity. You are in it now! A significant consequence of this identification between psychic world, spiritual world, and mental world, is to realize that we are born into the mental world of eternity with our immortal spiritual body, and therefore we are not really on earth, as it appears to be. The existential illusion that we are on earth, and that our mind is in the physical body comes from the fact that our natural mind in eternity receives all its sensory input by correspondence from the physical body on earth. Our immortal spiritual body with which we are born into the mental world of eternity is connected by correspondence to our temporary physical body on earth. This is the source of our belief that we are on earth. We are disconnected from the physical body through the two-day dying-resuscitation procedure. When this occurs we lose all contact with earth and we begin immortal life in the afterlife of mental eternity.The purpose of being born temporarily connected to a physical body on earth is to provide the means by which human beings might acquire a natural mind that thinks with material ideas that are adapted to earth-time conditions and activities. Our natural mind becomes inactive in the afterlife of eternity but nevertheless serves as a basis for the use of our spiritual mind, which only then becomes fully active to eternity. We can then see and hear the environment of the afterlife world, and we can form normal relationships with those people who are already in that state of life.Swedenborg's observations confirm this explanation in that the afterlife world has a similar external appearance as what can be seen and heard on earth. We are all familiar with the experience of dreaming in which the setting resembles the physical world. Without our natural mind our dreams would have no content. In the afterlife, our natural mind is needed as a basis for providing us with material content in mental eternity. Following the two-day dying-resuscitation procedure that Swedenborg describes from empirical observation and experience, we are no longer connected by correspondence to the physical body on earth. We seem to ourselves at that point to "awaken" in the afterlife world. We then seek, find, and settle in one of the numberless afterlife societies, some of which Swedenborg explored in his dual consciousness and described in his Writings. Which of the societies we settle in is determined by our personality inclinations. We are attracted to the afterlife society whose inhabitants have a personality structure that is compatible with ours. Dr. James' current work involves showing the details of how God instructs us in Sacred Scripture regarding the psychology of regeneration, which is the systematic modification of our personality from the inherited personality that is based on self-love and self-interest, to a new acquired personality that is based on altruism and mutual love. Dr. James shows that Jung's idea of "symbolism" is the same as Swedenborg's idea of "correspondences". As well, Jung's idea of "archetype" is the same as Swedenborg's idea of "ruling love" that characterizes the personality of the people in each afterlife society.
