A lavishly illustrated volume of C.G. Jung’s visual work, from drawing to painting to sculpture. A world-renowned, founding figure in analytical psychology, and one of the twentieth century’s most vibrant thinkers, C.G. Jung imbued as much inspiration, passion, and precision in what he made as in what he wrote. Though it spanned his entire lifetime and included painting, drawing, and sculpture, Jung’s practice of visual art was a talent that Jung himself consistently downplayed out of a stated desire never to claim the title “artist.” But the long-awaited and landmark publication, in 2009, of C.G. Jung’s The Red Book revealed an astonishing visual facet of a man so influential in the realm of thought and words, as it integrated stunning symbolic images with an exploration of “thinking in images” in therapeutic work and the development of the method of Active Imagination. The remarkable depictions that burst forth from the pages of that calligraphic volume remained largely unrecognized and unexplored until publication. The release of The Red Book generated enormous interest in Jung’s visual works and allowed scholars to engage with the legacy of Jung’s creativity. The essays collected here present previously unpublished artistic work and address a remarkably broad spectrum of artistic accomplishment, both independently and within the context of The Red Book, itself widely represented. Tracing the evolution of Jung’s visual efforts from early childhood to adult life while illuminating the close relation of Jung’s lived experience to his scientific and creative endeavors, The Art of C.G. Jung offers a diverse exhibition of Jung’s engagement with visual art as maker, collector, and analyst.

In this book, Tjeu van den Berk examines C. G. Jung's personal perspective on art and how his work intensely engages with this theme. It analyses Jung’s profound reflections on artistic considerations such as how we experience art, the specific qualities in the perception of beauty, the nature of the creative process and the aesthetic attitude. Jung on Art considers Jung's feelings about art simply being 'art' rather than reducing it to a moral, political, religious or psychological product. It also discusses Jung’s notion that the artist is only a breeding ground for a piece of art, and once complete, the piece has an independent existence. Topics covered include: symbolism the difference between art and aesthetics Jung's ideas about himself as an artist the psychology of art Jung's perspective on modern art and surrealism. This book will be of great interest to all Jungian scholars, as well as those interested in the meeting of Jung and art.

The first English translation of Jung’s landmark lecture on Nerval’s hallucinatory memoir In 1945, at the end of the Second World War and after a long illness, C. G. Jung delivered a lecture in Zürich on the French Romantic poet Gérard de Nerval. The lecture focused on Nerval's visionary memoir, Aurélia, which the poet wrote in an ambivalent attempt to emerge from madness. Published here for the first time, Jung’s lecture is both a cautionary psychological tale and a validation of Nerval’s visionary experience as a genuine encounter. Nerval explored the irrational with lucidity and exquisite craft. He privileged the subjective imagination as a way of fathoming the divine to reconnect with what the Romantics called the life principle. During the years of his greatest creativity, he suffered from madness and was institutionalized eight times. Contrasting an orthodox psychoanalytic interpretation with his own synthetic approach to the unconscious, Jung explains why Nerval was unable to make use of his visionary experiences in his own life. At the same time, Jung emphasizes the validity of Nerval’s visions, differentiating the psychology of a work of art from the psychology of the artist. The lecture suggests how Jung’s own experiments with active imagination influenced his reading of Nerval’s Aurélia as a parallel text to his own Red Book. With Craig Stephenson’s authoritative introduction, Richard Sieburth’s award-winning translation of Aurélia, and Alfred Kubin’s haunting illustrations to the text, and featuring Jung’s reading marginalia, preliminary notes, and revisions to a 1942 lecture, On Psychological and Visionary Art documents the stages of Jung’s creative process as he responds to an essential Romantic text.

The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature offers unique and penetrating insights into the lives and opinions of some of the most significant players in the cultural life of the twentieth century. Carl Gustav Jung was at the heart of that cultural life, pioneering, along with Freud, a new interpretation of what it meant to be human in the modern age. This volume reveals the full range of Jung's involvement in this process, from his famous analysis of 'Psychology and Literature' to his landmark texts on Joyce's Ulysses and Picasso's paintings. Jung writes of Freud from the perspective of one who was "permitted a deep glimpse into the mind of this remarkable man," and through the memories and opinions recorded in The Spirit in Man, Art and Literature, the reader is offered a similar privilege.

Joyce and Jung offers a provocatively original chapter-by-chapter analysis of Stephen Dedalus' psychosexual growth in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The author frames this within the Jungian soul-portrait gallery known as the «four stages of eroticism» in which Eve, Helen, Mary, and Sophia are the soul-portraits of Western civilization, drawing the collective eros into the psychic field to be witnessed as universal spectacle. In James Joyce's twentieth-century classic, Stephen's soul-portraits are the mother, the prostitute, the Virgin Mary, and the Bird-Girl.

PHOTO ART THERAPY: A JUNGIAN PERSPECTIVE illuminates and guides the reader through new possibilities for art therapy practice, approached by the authors as a creative interaction with different artistic media and therapeutic methods. Although the book is based on Jungian theory and practice, the authors carefully explore cooperation with other therapeutic perspectives, all of which are in keeping with Jung's belief in transcendent universals and multifaceted therapeutic practices. The book is divided into four sections: Self-Understanding, Alleviating Distress and Symptoms, Group Therapy, and Discussion. Wherever possible and practical, photo art therapy work done by clients as illustrations of the concepts is included. The text not only demonstrates innovative ways of combining artistic media but allows clients to articulate the inner workings of the therapeutic process through an engaging series of dialogues and narrations. The book establishes a twofold landmark in elucidating art thera-py's close and vital connections to both phototherapy and the discipline of Jungian psychotherapy.

Jung S Reception Of Picasso And Abstract Art written by Lucinda Hill and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-31 with Psychology categories.
This book explores the nature of Jung’s understanding of modern art, in particular his reception to the work of Picasso and his striking prejudice shown in his controversial essay of 1932. Offering an important contribution towards understanding Jung’s attitudes towards Picasso and modern art, the book addresses the impact that Jung’s unwillingness to engage in a deeper exploration of modern artforms had on the development of his psychological ideas. It explores and uncovers the reasons for Jung’s derogatory view of Picasso and abstract art more generally, revealing how Jung was unable to remain objective due to his own complex and equally fascinating relationship with art and the psychology of image making. The book argues that modern art parallels Jung’s interests by embracing the spirit of experimentation and using new imagery to challenge creative conceptions, which makes Jung’s attitudes towards modern art all the more surprising. Jung’s Reception of Picasso and Abstract Art will be of great interest to researchers, academics and those interested in analytical psychology, Jungian studies, art history and modernism, aesthetics and psychoanalysis.
