This monograph details Gutzkow's recurring use of performance-within-the-play as a means of encouraging an active, political response by the audience. He incorporates an internal audience viewing a performance on stage in order to model an ideal of dramatic reception for the audiences of his own play. Gutzkow structures the narrative contextualization of these performances as reflections of specific issues in the German states of the Vormärz. Beginning with an overview of theoretical and literary texts from the 1830s, this study traces Gutzkow's transferral of self-reflexive structures from his novels of this decade into his first staged play, Richard Savage (1839), and on through Das Urbild des Tartüffe (1844) and Uriel Acosta (1845). It concludes by portraying Der Königsleutnant (1849) as a transitional work that shows Gutzkow's decision to return to the novel as a consequence of the failure of his plays to attain the reception he intended. By using the coherency of the communicated message instead of fealty to aesthetic norms as the evaluative criteria for discussing Gutzkow's plays, the book exposes an innovative mode of specifically literary social criticism in these works that complements their traditional assessment as documentation of the cultural history of Liberalism in this period.

Bereits mit 34 Jahren veröffentlichte der Berliner Berufsschriftsteller und Journalist Karl Gutzkow (1811-1879) seine «Gesammelten Werke». Er war damit in den Stand eines Klassikers erhoben und ließ sich dies gut honorieren. Was sind die Gründe für Gutzkows erfolgreiche Arrivierung? Immerhin war ihm nur wenige Jahre zuvor seitens der preußischen Behörden die «frechste Verunglimpfung des Christenthums» vorgeworfen worden. Er galt als politisch gefährlich. Ein Großteil seiner Schriften wurde verboten. Gemeinhin wird die Zensur in der Selbstdarstellung der Autoren nur als Störfaktor unter dem Aspekt der politischen bzw. ideologischen Gängelung gesehen. Auch für Gutzkow war der Kampf gegen die Zensur zweifellos von Bedeutung. Aber bei der (gängigen) Annahme, dass die Zensur nur als Hindernis bei der Durchsetzung auf dem Literaturmarkt zu bewerten sei, wird übersehen, dass Gutzkow beispielsweise 1835 mit seinem Roman Wally, die Zweiflerin einen Skandal provozierte. Sein Vergehen war, dass er dem gelehrten Streit zwischen theologischem Rationalismus und protestantischer Orthodoxie eine lebensnahe Praxis gab und diesen somit für ein ungelehrtes Publikum interessant machte. Gutzkow setzte in seiner Strategie des Arrivierens das Einschreiten der Obrigkeit und der Zensurbehörden als positiven Faktor voraus und machte sie damit bewusst zum Mitspieler in seinem komplexen und gewagten Erfolgskalkül. Schließlich gab es im Vormärz einen Markt für oppositionelle Literatur und entsprechend Verleger, die Interesse an solcher Ware hatten. Diese Verleger und die uneinheitliche Zensurpolitik in den Einzelstaaten des Deutschen Bundes ermöglichten schließlich Gutzkows Erfolg. Sein Werk ist dabei paradigmatisch für die Existenz eines auf sich gestellten, modernen und selbstbewussten Berufsschriftstellers anzusehen.
