Mozart In The Jungle written by Blair Tindall and has been published by Atlantic Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-30 with Music categories.

Now a major Amazon.com TV series starring Gabriel Garcia Bernal. From her debut recital at Carnegie Hall to performing with the orchestras of Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, oboist Blair Tindall has been playing classical music professionally for over twenty-five years. She's also lived the secret life of musicians who survive hand to mouth, trading sex and drugs for low-paying gigs and the promise of winning a rare symphony position or a lucrative solo recording contract. In Mozart in the Jungle, Tindall describes her graduation from the North Carolina School of the Arts to the backbiting New York classical music scene, a world where Tindall and her fellow classical musicians often play drunk, high, or hopelessly hung-over, live in decrepit apartments, and perform in hazardous conditions. (In the cramped confines of a Broadway pit, the decibel level of one instrument is equal to the sound of a chain saw.) Mozart in the Jungle offers a stark contrast between the rarefied experiences of overpaid classical musician superstars and those of the working-class musicians. For lovers of classical music, Mozart in the Jungle is the first true, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on backstage and in the Broadway pit.

The Ethnobotany Of Eden written by Robert A. Voeks and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-27 with Science categories.

In the mysterious and pristine forests of the tropics, a wealth of ethnobotanical panaceas and shamanic knowledge promises cures for everything from cancer and AIDS to the common cold. To access such miracles, we need only to discover and protect these medicinal treasures before they succumb to the corrosive forces of the modern world. A compelling biocultural story, certainly, and a popular perspective on the lands and peoples of equatorial latitudes—but true? Only in part. In The Ethnobotany of Eden, geographer Robert A. Voeks unravels the long lianas of history and occasional strands of truth that gave rise to this irresistible jungle medicine narrative. By exploring the interconnected worlds of anthropology, botany, and geography, Voeks shows that well-intentioned scientists and environmentalists originally crafted the jungle narrative with the primary goal of saving the world’s tropical rainforests from destruction. It was a strategy deployed to address a pressing environmental problem, one that appeared at a propitious point in history just as the Western world was taking a more globalized view of environmental issues. And yet, although supported by science and its practitioners, the story was also underpinned by a persuasive mix of myth, sentimentality, and nostalgia for a long-lost tropical Eden. Resurrecting the fascinating history of plant prospecting in the tropics, from the colonial era to the present day, The Ethnobotany of Eden rewrites with modern science the degradation narrative we’ve built up around tropical forests, revealing the entangled origins of our fables of forest cures.

HOW FORBIDDEN MEDICINE HEALED MY DEPRESSION. BEFORE YOU KILL YOURSELF, DO SOME DRUGS IN THE JUNGLEDespite having conventional "success", I found myself at emotional rock bottom. Domestic abuse, rape, depression, eating disorders ... I carried unhealed trauma for over 25 years. I decided to try "banned" spiritual medicine in the jungle as a last-ditch effort to save my life. This crazy, illogical decision changed my life. This is the tale of my life-changing vacation with jungle juice. BOOK PREVIEW: Chapter 1 - HOW I LOST MY SOULI remember exactly when I pushed my soul away.First, when I was 6 years old and being told that I was not wanted by my parents. My parents were having a very difficult time back then.Out of their own pains, they told me to go away. When I couldn't stop crying, they told me to jump off a building. The second time was when I was raped by two men.I was 22. I was shoved into a car and raped by a stranger. Then, when I asked someone I trusted to bring me to the hospital, he chose to rape me again. I was married back then. Not surprisingly, my marriage fell apart shortly after. The third time was when I discovered my partner's betrayal. We spent 5 years of our lives together. We built a business together. I was 29 when I met him.Despite how much I wanted the relationship to work, he never had any intention of being with me. The extent of lies was beyond what my heart could handle. All those times, I asked the Universe to remove my heart so I would never have to feel again.I vowed I would never trust or love anyone again because I never wanted to get hurt. I felt my soul leave because I asked it to.And I died. From that point on, I just existed. That was the only way I knew to continue living. I isolated myself from others.I didn't want to let anyone in.I only attracted people who were also empty. We had superficial relationships at the best.CHAPTERS:1. HOW I LOST MY SOUL2. LIVING NUMB3. Graham Johnson was a fresh-faced journalist with an ambition to break the big news stories and make his name as a star reporter when an offer came in to work at a leading tabloid… he couldn't say no. Instantly, he found himself drawn into a world of sleaze, spin and corruption - where bending the law was justifiable in the hunt for the big-selling story and bending the truth was the norm. Against his better judgement, Graham found his niche in this new world and, what's more, he found that he was good at it. In his time at first the News of the Worldthen the Sunday Mirror, he made a name for himself as a man who could deliver the story, no matter what - a kind of tabloid terrorist who rifled through celebrity's rubbish bins, staked out politicians' hotel rooms, and paid-up page three girls to seduce Premiership footballers, all in the name of scoring a front-page story. Hackis a compelling and intoxicating story of one man's time in the tabloid jungle - a world that in its heady mix of sex, drugs and casual immorality is reminiscent of the City - and how he ultimately saved himself.

Jungle Laboratories written by Gabriela Soto Laveaga and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-23 with History categories.

In the 1940s chemists discovered that barbasco, a wild yam indigenous to Mexico, could be used to mass-produce synthetic steroid hormones. Barbasco spurred the development of new drugs, including cortisone and the first viable oral contraceptives, and positioned Mexico as a major player in the global pharmaceutical industry. Yet few people today are aware of Mexico’s role in achieving these advances in modern medicine. In Jungle Laboratories, Gabriela Soto Laveaga reconstructs the story of how rural yam pickers, international pharmaceutical companies, and the Mexican state collaborated and collided over the barbasco. By so doing, she sheds important light on a crucial period in Mexican history and challenges us to reconsider who can produce science. Soto Laveaga traces the political, economic, and scientific development of the global barbasco industry from its emergence in the 1940s, through its appropriation by a populist Mexican state in 1970, to its obsolescence in the mid-1990s. She focuses primarily on the rural southern region of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, where the yam grew most freely and where scientists relied on local, indigenous knowledge to cultivate and harvest the plant. Rural Mexicans, at first unaware of the pharmaceutical and financial value of barbasco, later acquired and deployed scientific knowledge to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies, lobby the Mexican government, and ultimately transform how urban Mexicans perceived them. By illuminating how the yam made its way from the jungles of Mexico, to domestic and foreign scientific laboratories where it was transformed into pills, to the medicine cabinets of millions of women across the globe, Jungle Laboratories urges us to recognize the ways that Mexican peasants attained social and political legitimacy in the twentieth century, and positions Latin America as a major producer of scientific knowledge.

He prays to the Virgin of the Assassins that his bullets find their target. If he misses, he’ll have to answer to the cartel who pay him to take out their enemies. Pedro works the coca labs.
