A Sniper's Story A sniper using the jungle to conceal his intentions becomes the hunter that can strike at his calling with swift and deadly force. BACK COVER As the morning sun rises high in the sky, the heavy dew begins to burn off, creating a layer of fog in the jungle. The humidity is at its maximum, and the sweat starts to run down my forehead, trickling over my eye and then to my nose before dripping off. I lay motionless, watching for any movement. I listen carefully, separating the noises of the jungle from any unnatural movements. I hold my breath and listen, then breathe again softly. A group of macaque monkeys noisily climb the trees and begin to greedily eat some fruit. The jungle residents are getting down to what might be called their morning routine. I take a drink from my canteen and hear a snapping sound from my right quarter. I strain to see through the vines and spot someone moving in my direction. Several soldiers come into sight; this looks like a Viet Cong (VC) recon patrol. I make sure my cover is good and move my rifle into position. Looking through the scope, I watch the first figure come into sharp focus. I remove the safety and take a calming breath. The lead soldier hesitates and whispers something to the man behind him, who signals the others to stop. They have heard the monkeys rummaging about, and after a long pause, the lead soldier seems satisfied and continues to move forward. Like the jungle tiger, I will wait for the prey to come to me and then swiftly strike with a deadly force!

Thanks for looking, The smART bookx design team About Henri Rousseau & Tiger in a Tropical Storm (or Surprise!)Henri Julien Felix Rousseau was a French Post-Impressionist artist known for his bold & brightly colored canvases. Unlike those in a Gauguin or a Matisse these vivid colors of Henri Rousseau are not flat but instead define elements, such as foliage, with such voluptuous volume that it is uplifting to behold—his art, quite simply, provokes a smile. The irony is that when the public of the day gathered beneath his huge canvases it was not to smile with joy, but to smile with laughter! In the 1889 exhibition one critic said of the painting by Rousseau, & the one adjacent to it, that he had never seen anything so grotesque. (The adjacent painting was a van Gogh.) Year after year Henri Rousseau was ridiculed. Whether this mockery was suffered & endured or ignored is difficult to discern. Rousseau possessed such a simple, almost meek character that the word naïve is often used to describe both his life and his art. Unlike his fellow non-traditional artists (e.g. the Impressionists) he didn't shun established academic art, but revered it. Being entirely self-taught & only taking up painting at the age of 40, Rousseau believed that had he been traditionally trained he would have painted just like them, but because he wasn't he would humbly stick to the style that pleased him, come what may. So Henri Rousseau, the quiet, unglamorous, ex-customs inspector, who didn't have affairs or suffer mental illness or have wild political opinions, pursued his relatively short artistic career hardly noticed by his contemporary renegade artistic peers. It was, instead, to be the next generation of artists that were inspired by Henri Rousseau. His work was revered & purchased by the likes of Picasso, Kandinsky & the American artist Max Weber. Rousseau played a key role in the development of Fauvism, Cubism & Surrealism. Tiger in a Tropical Storm or Surprise!Foliage is present somewhere in almost every painting Rousseau did. In Surprise! a tiger prowls through a stormy, rain-lashed jungle lit by flashes of lightening. A spectrum of rich vibrant greens is interspersed with splashes of red. This was the first of a series of jungle paintings by Rousseau. They share the common theme that they often document an encounter between two protagonists, usually wild animals, though in the almost exclusive case of Surprise! the only party we see is the tiger. We are left guessing who or what is surprised—is it the tiger or the unseen prey? Unlike later paintings in the series which are usually still to the point of tranquility, Surprise! is brimming with energy and movement. Henri Rousseau copied the tiger from a Delacroix sketch called Encounter of a Lion and a Tiger. The inspiration for the foliage came from frequent pilgrimages to the botanical garden in Paris & also from the World Exhibitions in which pavilions bursting with displays of exotic animals & plants from the French colonies were erected. It is highly unlikely that he ever actually set foot in the tropics or even left France at all.
