Alexandre Dumas intenționa să o facă opera sa majoră: o frescă completă a istoriei umanității, în jurul unui erou principal care personalizează mitul evreului rătăcitor . Sub acoperirea unei ficțiuni, romanul va oferi o meditație asupra miturilor antice și moderne. Seria a început să apară în decembrie 1852, dar a întâmpinat rapid ostilitatea cercurilor catolice. Constituționalul decide să înceteze publicarea în martie 1853. Alexandre Dumas întrerupe redactarea, până la zile mai bune. Lucrarea, așa cum o știm astăzi, a fost publicată pentru prima dată în 1853. În afară de câteva ediții parțiale, a fost uitată până când au apărut două ediții complete, în 2005, 2006 și aceasta. * În 1469, un pelerin misterios, aparent invulnerabil, a intrat la Roma pe Calea Appiană. Primit de Papa Paul al II-lea , este recunoscut drept evreul rătăcitor, condamnat să călătorească în veșnicie pentru că l-a insultat pe Hristos, când a trecut în mijlocul mulțimii pe Calea Crucii, în timpul Patimii. Pedeapsa lui trebuie să se încheie atunci când Hristos Mântuitorul rostește următoarele cuvinte ale mântuirii sale: "Stai jos și încetează să mergi!"

Finalul, are dimensiuni hiperbolice prin nebunia, atât la propriu cât și la figurat, pe care o propagă, lăsând în percepţia cititorului un gust inefabil.

Diary of a Short-Sighted Adolescent was written by the young Mircea Eliade - one of Romania's greatest writers and intellectuals. The book can be viewed as an early 20th century 'Catcher in the Rye', and allows us an intimate view of the developing genius, whose literary output has been neglected in the English language for too lon.
