As the author, I must confess. The idea for this story did not suddenly pop into my head. It evolved from one profound statement spoken by a Black mother more than thirty years ago. "We don't promote Santa Claus to our children," she shared, "because Santa is a White thing." The look on her face and the tone of her voice-serious and full of Black pride-remain vivid in my mind today. Prior to "getting" this mother's message on a deep, cellular level, I had never considered how people of Color viewed Santa Claus. I just assumed everybody loved him. After my eyes were opened, I concluded: the continued portrayal of Santa Claus as White in the majority of Christmas novels, store ads, movies, TV shows, and the like, smacks racism. Okay. Why make a big deal out of "an insignificant little thing" like Santa being White? After all, look around. Nobody seems to care. Yes, nobody cares. No. Wait. Perhaps it's not fair to say, "Nobody cares." My bad. Let me reframe my thoughts about this " non-conscious, insignificant little thing" by saying, "Nobody seems to be aware that the constant portrayal of Santa Claus as White is "no little thing" to people of Color. Or put another way. It is no little thing when people of Color interpret "a little thing" like Santa being White as racist. The truth is glaring. Young children, at or even before the onset of walking and talking, view Santa Claus as a significant character. Do the math. There are more children of Color than White in this world. So, why in the world, is Santa still promoted as predominately White? In due time, I concluded: our society needs an all-inclusive Santa, one who represents humanity's full rainbow spectrum-Black, White, Red, Yellow and Brown. At the same time, this man needs to be perceived by all ethnicities as one Santa for all. I asked myself: If I write a book to raise the conscience-ness of this one little non-conscious thing, will society gain an understanding of why the promotion of Santa Claus as predominately White is offensive to people of Color? Will it "hit home" in a non-offensive way? At this point, I reminded myself: Not until I was shocked by the Black mother's statement did I grasp an awareness of this injustice. In writing this work of fiction, I set the bar high. First, plausibility was key. The story had to not only come alive, it had to seem real. Second, it could not negate, degrade, defame, bash or destroy anything previously written about this lovable character. It had to be an integrative "add-to" rather than a "put-down" or "replacement" process. Third, the characters had to be representative of all ethnicities. In my story, Santa is still the same old Santa. I didn't change what he represents, but I did open the door for all ethnicities, actually all humanity, to see him in a new light. How did I do this? I simply enhanced his character with a secret, a secret that enmeshes him in a life-long deception, a secret that entraps him, a secret he's determined to keep from the world forever. After a lifetime of successfully hiding his secret "differentness," an unexpected event creates havoc and threatens exposure of his secret. As he struggles to cope, his humanness spills all over the place. Santa and his wife's struggles fit right into Twenty-first Century thinking. Abuse, bullying, overprotection, love relationships, grief, trickery, self-loathing, lies, faulty thinking and much more are intertwined in this very believable fictitious story. Most importantly, my underlying purpose for writing Kaleidoscope SANTA was to create one plausible Santa, one that represents humanity's full rainbow spectrum, one that parents of all ethnicities will feel comfortable promoting to their children. This is not the typical author description; but the fun of reading this story-with its many unexpected surprises-is starting out knowing nothing about it, other than what I laid out above. Yes.
