This book examines the emergence of alternative forms of news reporting in Brazil with a focus on progressive not-for-profit initiatives. In combining different genres of non-commercial journalism, this study allows us to better understand the potential of alternative news producers in times of continuing technological shifts and their efforts to diversify the news production. Sarmento explores a range of significant questions, including: what does it mean to practice “alternative” journalism? To what extent do non-mainstream practices subvert the taxonomy of news values? Do alternative journalists adhere to or reject journalism’s core values? Goiás tem a tradição de ações coletivas muito combativas de jovens secundaristas, ao menos desde o movimento estudantil de 1968. Igualmente, nas Jornadas de 2013, em que "jovens pobres" tiveram atuação impactante em ações nas periferias de Goiânia e em outras cidades. Enfim, é tema deste importante livro, Educação, juventudes e participação política, as ocupações de escolas públicas de ensino médio, no final de 2015 e no início de 2016. O autor, João Batista Coelho Cunha, é mestre em Educação pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Goiás, professor da rede pública estadual e militante, tanto das lutas de trabalhadoras e trabalhadores da educação quanto, antes, do movimento estudantil. Aqui, ele analisa a participação política de "jovens pobres" no movimento das ocupações de escolas em Goiás, buscando entender os sentidos que tais jovens atribuíram a essa ação coletiva. Destacam-se os relatos das seis entrevistas com tais jovens, que flagram uma arrojada resistência juvenil ao avanço de políticas neoliberais contra a educação pública. Apesar de todas as violências, ameaças e repressões vividas por tais jovens, o movimento foi vitorioso em sua principal pauta, qual seja, barrar a adoção nas escolas estaduais da gestão por Organizações Sociais, disfarce para certa privatização da educação pública e maior precarização do trabalho docente. Talvez mais importante, porém, parecem ter sido as transformações que os sujeitos da ocupação sofreram com essa experiência: certa ruptura com uma condição de invisibilidade diante da instituição escolar, tradicionalmente autoritária; o aprendizado da ação política em uma forma democrática e horizontal, aprendendo a negociar, a buscar apoio político e a dominar um repertório político e midiático; e o autorreconhecimento como sujeitos políticos. Alessandra, jovem entrevistada por João Cunha, diz enfaticamente: "o movimento em si contribuiu mais para mim do que eu para ele". Discordando da jovem, nós é que aprendemos com ela, assim como com aquelas e aqueles que ocuparam escolas ao longo de 2015 e 2016 em, praticamente, todas as unidades federativas de nosso país. Este livro continua a nos ensinar, ao trazer as vozes dessas personagens tão corajosas e combativas.
