Excerpt from Kalm's Account of His Visit to England: On His Way to America in 1748 Pehr Kalm was born in March, 1716, in the Swedish Province of Angermanland, three months after the death of his father, Gabriel Kalm, Minister at Nerpes, in Osterbotn. His mother's name was Catharina Ross. Kalm became a student at Abo in 1735, where Professor Brovallius directed his attention to Natural History. Brovallius introduced him to Baron Bjelke, who not only received him into his own house, but sent him to travel; in 1740 to tavastland, Savolax, and Karelen, and in 1741 to Upland and Vestmanland. On setting out for the latter he entered as a student at Upsala, under the guidance and instruction of the great Linnaeus. In 1742 he travelled through Vestgotha and Bohuslan, and published his "Vesgotha och Bohuslanska Resa" in 1746. In 1743 he visited the Skjargard, or Archipelago on both sides of Stockholm, in Roslagen and Sodermanland. In 1712, English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683–1749) crossed the Atlantic to Virginia. After a seven-year stay, he returned to England with paintings of plants and animals he had studied. They sufficiently impressed other naturalists that in 1722 several Fellows of the Royal Society sponsored his return to North America. There Catesby cataloged the flora and fauna of the Carolinas and the Bahamas by gathering seeds and specimens, compiling notes, and making watercolor sketches. Going home to England after five years, he began the twenty-year task of writing, etching, and publishing his monumental The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Mark Catesby was a man of exceptional courage and determination combined with insatiable curiosity and multiple talents. Nevertheless no portrait of him is known. The international contributors to this volume review Catesby’s biography alongside the historical and scientific significance of his work. Ultimately, this lavishly illustrated volume advances knowledge of Catesby’s explorations, collections, artwork, and publications in order to reassess his importance within the pantheon of early naturalists.

Celebrating the rich heritage of archaeology and of archaeological research in Hertfordshire, the 15 papers collected in this work focus on various aspects of the region, including the Neolithic to the post-Medieval periods, and include a report on the important excavations at the formative henge at Norton. Several chapters focus new attention on the Iron Age and Roman periods, both from a landscape perspective and through detailed studies of artefacts, while a discussion of the rare early Saxon material recently excavated at Watton at Stone makes a vital contribution to the existing corpus of knowledge about this little-understood period. All of the papers in the volume focus on the local scene with an understanding of wider issues in each period and as a result, the papers are of importance beyond the boundaries of the county and will be of interest to scholars with wide-ranging interests.
