Der Autor zeigt, wie die antisemitische Vertreibungspolitik gegenüber jüdischen Wissenschaftlern mit dem Ziel einer verschärften Militarisierung der Forschung im Rahmen der NS-Wissenschaftspolitik in Einklang gebracht wurde, und geht der Frage nach, inwiefern die Direktoren aufgrund ihrer exponierten Stellung als Fachspartenleiter des Reichsforschungsrates für den Zugriff auf KZ-Häftlinge als Forscher, Sklavenarbeiter oder Versuchsopfer verbrecherischer Menschenversuche für eine Wissenschaft mitverantwortlich waren, die keine ethischen Grenzen mehr kannte.

While the coerced human experiments are notorious among all the atrocities under National Socialism, they have been marginalised by mainstream historians. This book seeks to remedy the marginalisation, and to place the experiments in the context of the broad history of National Socialism and the Holocaust. Paul Weindling bases this study on the reconstruction of a victim group through individual victims' life histories, and by weaving the victims' experiences collectively together in terms of different groupings, especially gender, ethnicity and religion, age, and nationality. The timing of the experiments, where they occurred, how many victims there were, and who they were, is analysed, as are hitherto under-researched aspects such as Nazi anatomy and executions. The experiments are also linked, more broadly, to major elements in the dynamic and fluid Nazi power structure and the implementation of racial policies. The approach is informed by social history from below, exploring both the rationales and motives of perpetrators, but assessing these critically in the light of victim narratives.

Representing a new wave of research and analysis on Nazi human experiments and coerced research, the chapters in this volume deliberately break from a top-down history limited to concentration camp experiments under the control of Himmler and the SS. Instead the collection positions extreme experiments (where research subjects were taken to the point of death) within a far wider spectrum of abusive coerced research. The book considers the experiments not in isolation but as integrated within wider aspects of medical provision as it became caught up in the Nazi war economy, revealing that researchers were opportunistic and retained considerable autonomy. The sacrifice of so many prisoners, patients and otherwise healthy people rounded up as detainees raises important issues about the identities of the research subjects: who were they, how did they feel, how many research subjects were there and how many survived? This underworld of the victims of the elite science of German medical institutes and clinics has until now remained a marginal historical concern. Jews were a target group, but so were gypsies/Sinti and Roma, the mentally ill, prisoners of war and partisans. By exploring when and in what numbers scientists selected one group rather than another, the book provides an important record of the research subjects having agency, reconstructing responses and experiential narratives, and recording how these experiments – iconic of extreme racial torture – represent one of the worst excesses of Nazism.

When the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics opened its doors in 1927, it could rely on wide political approval. Auf Basis intensiver Archivforschung legt der Historiker Timo Baumann eine Geschichte der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kreislaufforschung (DGK) im Nationalsozialismus vor. Er untersucht die Entwicklung dieser 1927 gegründeten medizinischen Fachgesellschaft in organisatorischer, personeller und medizinisch-wissenschaftlicher Hinsicht. Analysiert wird die Organisations- und Mitgliederentwicklung der wachsenden DGK, die als kleiner Kreis von Spitzenforschern 1932 rund 200 Mitglieder hatte. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt Ärzten, die als Konsequenz staatlicher Verfolgung ab 1933 sukzessive von den Mitgliederlisten verschwanden. Prozesse von Anpassung und Verdrängung werden am persönlichen Schicksal verfolgter Mitglieder nachgezeichnet, zu denen auch DGK-Begründer Bruno Kisch zählte. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bildet die NS-Verstrickung von Amts- und Preisträgern sowie Mitgliedern der Gesellschaft, auch über das Jahr 1941 mit der letzten Jahrestagung im Krieg hinaus. Der Autor zeigt Formen der Anpassung an ein Regime, das nur noch kriegs- oder staatswichtige Forschung förderte. Nachgezeichnet wird die medizinische Wehrforschung etlicher Mitglieder, die sich insbesondere an der Ermöglichung des Höhenfluges, 1942 an der Luftwaffentagung „Seenot und Winternot“ sowie an Kälteversuchen beteiligten. Es ergibt sich daraus ein differenziertes Bild individueller Verstrickung und Schuld, der Aufweichung ärztlicher Ethik in einer zunehmend auf militärische Interessen reduzierten medizinischen Spezialforschung.

Aside from the prominent perpetrators such as Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele or Klaus Barbie, there were numerous other cases of Nazis and Nazi sympathizers from Germany and Austria who ended up in Latin America after 1945. Their life trajectories, professional activities, and contacts to local elites in their new homes have hardly been subject to systematic research to date. This analysis of the relationship between science and totalitarian rule in one of the most technically advanced countries in the East bloc examines professional autonomy under dictatorship and the place of technology in Communist ideology. In Cold War-era East Germany, the German tradition of science-based technology merged with a socialist system that made technological progress central to its ideology. Technology became an important part of East German socialist identity--crucial to how Communists saw their system and how citizens saw their state. In Red Prometheus, Dolores Augustine examines the relationship between a dictatorial system and the scientific and engineering communities in East Germany from the end of the Second World War through the 1980s. Drawing on newly opened archives and extensive interviews, Augustine looks in detail at individual scientists' interactions with the East German system, examining the effectiveness of their resistance against the party's totalitarian impulses. She explains why many German scientists and engineers who were deported to the Soviet Union after World War II returned to East Germany rather than defecting to the capitalist West, traces scientists' attempts to hold on to some aspects of professional autonomy, and describes challenges to their professional identity on the factory floor. Augustine examines the quality of science and technology produced under Communist rule, looking at failed research projects and clashing cultures of innovation. She looks at technological myth-building in science fiction and propaganda. She explores individual career strategies, including the role played by gender in high-tech professions, and the ways that both enterprises and individuals responded to increasing state and party control of research during the 1980s. We cannot understand the economic choices made by East Germany, Augustine argues, unless we understand the cultural values reflected in the East German belief in technology as indispensable to progress and industrial development.
