“The book is designed” writes the author in his preface, “to do the general reader a service and, of course, his demands concern the larger sweep of Kant’s thought rather than the minute details of the Critical Philosophy.” And Wenley’s style certainly corroborates this statement. His way of getting from the larger environment in which Kant lived to the circumstances in Kant’s life, and from there to his thought and its consequences, is penetrating but remarkably clear. And this clarity is evident as much in Wenley’s language as it is in the structure of the book. Attractive as all this makes the book for the general reader, Wenley’s scholarly nature does present itself at critical points making the work as useful to the Kant specialist or the historian of philosophy.

Excerpt from Kant and His Philosophical Revolution More, perhaps, than any of the 'Epoch-Makers' whose achievements this Series records, Kant remains 'caviare to the general.' It is hard to reproduce the subtleties of his thought so that the average man may sense their ways, harder still to create vital appreciation of the importance and scope of his speculations. Probably, a profound 'revolution' was never loosed upon the world in such forbidding mien. For, as Kant says himself, "while the greatest care was bestowed upon the matter, little care was expended on the style, or in rendering it easy for the general reader." Further, my task has been made at once more and less difficult by the admirable commentaries upon the Kantian philosophy and its results accessible to English readers now. More difficult, because many matters have been explained with a skill and insight that I cannot pretend to rival. Less difficult, because the path has been blazed so clearly. A short, clear, and authoritative guide to one of the most important and difficult works of modern philosophy Perhaps the most influential work of modern philosophy, Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason is also one of the hardest to read, since it brims with complex arguments, difficult ideas, and tortuous sentences. In this short, accessible book, eminent philosopher and Kant expert Yirmiyahu Yovel helps readers find their way through the maze of Kant's classic by providing a clear and authoritative summary of the entire work. The distillation of decades of studying and teaching Kant, Yovel's "systematic explication" untangles the ideas and arguments of the Critique in the order in which Kant presents them. The result is an invaluable guide for philosophers and students.

Understanding Kant’s “pre-critical” philosophy is central to appreciating his three critiques. Overshadowed by the critiques, the early work stands on its own as a central contribution to the development of the philosophy of its time. In addition, it not only prepares the way for the critiques, but constitutes a hidden background without which they cannot be adequately understood. Here we find Kant’s great cosmology, which is what Kant later regarded as the “thing-in-itself,” persisting behind his notions of the noumenon, the intelligible world, and the postulates of morality. Although he finally decided that his grand cosmological vision could not be demonstrated, what cannot be strictly known can still be conjectured, justifiably believed, or postulated. Kant’s “only possible proof” for the existence of God remains implicit in the first critique. The only writer about whom Kant ever dedicated a major work, Dreams of a Spirit-Seer Elucidated by Dreams of Metaphysics, was Emanuel Swedenborg. Kant here explores a conjectural metaphysics of matter and spirit, and further formulates the meaning of “the intelligible world,” providing the ontological framework of his later ethics. If only one of Swedenborg’s documented spirit-seeings was valid, how feeble must the metaphysical dreams of philosophers themselves seem.

Kant argued that fundamental concepts of the human mind structure human experience, that reason is the source of morality, that aesthetics arises from a faculty of disinterested judgment, that space and time are forms of our understanding, and that the world as it is "in-itself" is unknowable. Kant took himself to have effected a Copernican revolution in philosophy, akin to Copernicus' reversal of the age-old belief that the sun revolved around the earth.
