How Karl Blossfeldt's plant photographs were disseminated in the popular media of the time, from pattern books to magazine spreads In the 1890s, the Berlin artist, sculptor and teacher Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) started to photograph plants, seeds and other illustrative material from nature for the purpose of teaching his students about the patterns and designs found in natural forms. His close-ups of the smallest plant parts, magnified up to 30 times their natural size, startle us as they dramatically highlight the geometrical and sculptural properties of plants. Published in 1928, his first collection of photographs, Urformen der Kunst (later translated into English as Art Forms in Nature) became an international bestseller and remains one of the most significant photobooks of the 20th century. Karl Blossfeldt: Variations is the first monograph to examine the reception of Blossfeldt's work. Drawing on unpublished materials, it analyzes the photographs' replication in teaching materials, pattern books, art books and in the pages of the illustrated press. The six sections of the book trace the paths that Blossfeldt's legendary plant motifs took in their incarnations as specimens, illustrations, patterns, analogues, models and abstractions from 1890 to 1945. Thematic contemporary appraisals illustrating the rediscovery of Blossfeldt's motifs in design and architecture over the past 20 years complement this new perspective on the beloved German photographer.

Robert Voit written by Robert Voit and has been published by Hatje Cantz this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Artificial flowers categories.

An album with the most beautiful flowers--yet something does not seem to be right, be it the scruffy contours of a stem made of plastic or the structure of the fabric used for the leaves. These are artificial flowers like those that are mass produced today and available in countless variations for decoration purposes. Making direct reference to Karl Blossfeldt's 'The alphabet of plants' ('Urformen der Kunst') from 1928, Robert Voit (*1969 in Erlangen) assembles an archive of "new" flowers and portrays them against a neutral background. He playfully exposes man's urge to imitate nature. Voit's earlier series New Trees also addressed the imitation of nature, featuring large-format photographs of mobile telephony antennas that blend into the landscape camouflaged as trees, cacti, or palm trees. Robert Voit studied in Thomas Ruff's master class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

The Routledge Companion to Sounding Art presents an overview of the issues, methods, and approaches crucial for the study of sound in artistic practice. Thirty-six essays cover a variety of interdisciplinary approaches to studying sounding art from the fields of musicology, cultural studies, sound design, auditory culture, art history, and philosophy. The companion website hosts sound examples and links to further resources. The collection is organized around six main themes: Sounding Art: The notion of sounding art, its relation to sound studies, and its evolution and possibilities. Acoustic Knowledge and Communication: How we approach, study, and analyze sound and the challenges of writing about sound. Listening and Memory: Listening from different perspectives, from the psychology of listening to embodied and technologically mediated listening. Acoustic Spaces, Identities and Communities: How humans arrange their sonic environments, how this relates to sonic identity, how music contributes to our environment, and the ethical and political implications of sound. Sonic Histories: How studying sounding art can contribute methodologically and epistemologically to historiography. Sound Technologies and Media: The impact of sonic technologies on contemporary culture, electroacoustic innovation, and how the way we make and access music has changed. With contributions from leading scholars and cutting-edge researchers, The Routledge Companion to Sounding Art is an essential resource for anyone studying the intersection of sound and art.
