Max Reger (1873-1916) is perhaps best-known for his organ music. This quickly assumed a prominent place in the repertory of German organists due in large measure to the efforts of Regers contemporary Karl Straube (1873-1950). The personal and collegial relationship between the composer and performer began in 1898 and developed until Regers death. By that time, Straube had established himself as an important artist and teacher in Leipzig and the central authority for the interpretation of Regers organ music. The Reger-Straube relationship functioned on a number of levels with decisive consequences both for the composition of the music and its interpretation over a period fraught with upheaval on sociopolitical, religious and aesthetic fronts. This book evaluates the significance of the relationship between the composer and organist using primary source materials such as autograph performing manuscripts, reviews, programmes, letters and archival sources from contemporary organ building. The result is a much enhanced understanding of Reger in terms of performance practice and reception history, and a re-examination of Straube and, more broadly, of Leipzig as a musical centre during this period.

Insofern ist es ein Glücksfall, dass aus der langjährigen Korrespondenz der beiden freundschaftlich verbundenen Persönlichkeiten ca. 60 Briefe erhalten blieben, die entweder, wie im Falle der Briefe Hallers, gänzlich unbekannt waren oder noch nicht publiziert worden sind. Sie werden nun in einer reich kommentierten und mit einer kenntnisreichen Einleitung versehenen Edition der interessierten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. In der Korrespondenz geht es um Privates und Berufliches, etwa um die Musik, die beiden am Herzen lag, oder um die Arbeiten des Historikers, aber auch um klassische Literatur und Neuheiten auf dem Buchmarkt. Die Tagespolitik schwingt dabei stets im Hintergrund mit. Was speziell Haller über die militärische Situation und die Zukunft Deutschlands gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs äußert, ist wirklichkeitsfremd und beklemmend zugleich. The historian Johannes Haller (1865–1947) and the Cantor of St Thomas’s church in Leipzig Karl Straube (1873–1950) are in their different spheres among the most influential German intellectuals of the first half of the 20th century. While Haller’s multi-volume work on the Papacy, „Das Papsttum. Idee und Wirklichkeit“ is still valued today as a grandiose achievement, Straube played a significant role in the revival of church music in the first third of the 20th century. It is therefore a fortunate chance that some 60 letters survive from the long correspondence between the two friends; some, as in the case of Haller’s letters were completely unknown, while others have never been published. Now they have been made available to an interested audience in a richly annotated edition with a well-informed introduction. The correspondence concerns both private and professional life; music, which was close to both their hearts; the work of the historian; and also classical literature and newly-published books. Everyday politics is always present in the background. Haller’s words in particular about the military situation and the future of Germany towards the end of the Second World War are both fanciful and nightmarish. Because the two friends were consummate masters of the art of letter-writing, this edition is not only of significance for the history of art but also a stylistic pleasure.

Max Reger (1873-1916) was a celebrated German composer, performer on piano and organ, and conductor. Well known for his compositions for keyboards and orchestra, Reger worked during the crucial decades when Western music transformed itself from the misty veil of Romanticism and Impressionism to the more hard-edged modernism that would prevail in the 20th century. Less well known are his writings about music and the composer's craft. This is the third of a three-volume set on medieval scholarship that presents original biographical essays on scholars whose work has shaped medieval studies for the past four hundred years. A companion to Volume 1: History and Volume 2: Literature and Philology, Volume 3: Philosophy and the Arts covers the lives of twenty eminent individuals-from Victor Cousin (1792-1867) to Georges Chehata Anawati (1905-1994) in Philosophy; from H.J.W. Tillyard (1881-1968) to Gustave Reese (1899-1977) in Music; and from Alois Riegl (1858-1905) to Louis Grodecki (1910-1982) in Art History-whose subjects were the art, music, and philosophical thought of Europe between 500-1500. The scholars of medieval philosophy strove to identify the nexus of philosophical truth, whether they were engaged in the clash of the Christian church and secular republicanism as reflected in the tension between theology and philosophy, in addressing the conflicting perceptions of Muslim identity, or in defining Jewish philosophical theology in non-Jewish culture. Medieval musicologists, who are included as the subjects of the essays, pioneered or recontextualized traditional views on the definition of music as subject matter, on the relationship between music and philosophical concepts, on interpretative distinctions between secular and sacred music, monophony and polyphony, and concepts of form and compositional style.
