Seine frühe Lebenswelt war der burgundische Hof in Mecheln, wo er zum Herzog von Burgund erzogen wurde und in der Gestalt des burgundischen Ritters sein Leitbild fand. Er wurde zum »Bourguignon de coeur« und blieb es, obwohl der burgundische Lebensabschnitt bereits mit dem spanischen Erbfall endete. Entgegen der geläufigen Meinung, über die frühen Jahre des Kaisers sei wenig bekannt, vermag die Autorin ein aufschlussreiches Bild von der Erziehung des Prinzen, von dem Milieu, in dem er aufwuchs, und von den Persönlichkeiten seines engsten Umfeldes zu zeichnen.
