Historians have traditionally studied late medieval education backward – through the eyes of religious and political reformers critical of that which preceded them. This has led to significant distortions. Histories written from this perspective, tend to overemphasize the novelty of early modern educational reforms at the expense of evident continuities, and focus on conflict between ecclesiastical and lay authorities rather than cooperation. This book focuses instead, on the medieval experience of education through a detailed reconstruction of the educational landscape of late medieval Regensburg. The resulting picture provides new insights into the relationship between civic authorities and ecclesiastical institutions, the role of education in social and economic mobility, and the connections between local communities and broader European educational structures.

Inspired by the social theories of Max Weber, David d'Avray asks in what senses medieval religion was rational and, in doing so, proposes a new approach to the study of the medieval past. Applying ideas developed in his companion volume on Rationalities in History, he explores how values, instrumental calculation, legal formality and substantive rationality interact and the ways in which medieval beliefs were strengthened by their mutual connections, by experience, and by mental images. He sheds new light on key themes and figures in medieval religion ranging from conversion, miracles and the ideas of Bernard of Clairvaux to Trinitarianism, papal government and Francis of Assisi's charismatic authority. This book shows how values and instrumental calculation affect each other in practice and demonstrates the ways in which the application of social theory can be used to generate fresh empirical research as well as new interpretative insights.

Die Studie untersucht die Handschriftenüberlieferung und Bildungshintergründe eines spätmittelalterlichen lateinisch gelehrten Kommentars zu den Fabeln des Anonymus-Neveleti mit deutschen Reimpaarepimythien, einem bislang nicht erschlossenen Proverbien- und Sentenzencorpus. Die Auswertung der Provenienzen, Mitüberlieferung und Kommentarinhalte zeigt einen Fabelkommentar akademischen Studienniveaus: Er ist in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts an Bildungsinstitutionen im ostmittel- und südostdeutschen Raum verbreitet und vermittelt anspruchsvolle artistische und klerikale Kernkompetenzen der spätmittelalterlichen Bildungskultur. Die deutschen Epimythien sind für den lateinisch-sprachsozialisierten Benutzer bestimmt als ein text- und wissensorganisierendes Kommentarelement von mnemotechnischer Qualität; zusammen mit den lateinischen Äsopsentenzen der Proverbia Esopi gelangt es in die Drucküberlieferung. Die in der Studie enthaltene Edition der Kommentartexte dokumentiert erstmals die spezifische Existenzweise der volkssprachigen Proverbien im Kontext der Gelehrtenkultur.
