Im ersten Kapitel wird zunächst der Kirchenkampf zwischen katholischer Kirche und Nationalsozialismus bis zum Abschluss des Reichskonkordats in allen seinen Facetten dargestellt, dann die Situation in der betrachteten Region - dem Erzbistum Köln - im Jahre 1935 beleuchtet. Im zweiten Kapitel wird das Konstrukt "katholisches Milieu" ausfürlich in seiner sozial- und mentalitätsgeschichtlichen und auch sozialpsychologischen Dimension entwickelt und als "Raster" auf die betrachtete Landgemeinde und ihre Menschen im Jahr 1935 übertragen. Hierbei wird vor allem auf unveröffentlichte Quellen aus kirchlichen und privaten Beständen zurückgegriffen. Im dritten Kapitel wird die für diese Arbeit zentral wichtige Priesterpersönlicheit ausführlich vorgestellt und aus den Perspektiven von Zeitzeugen, Freunden, kirchlichen Vorgesetzten und seinen Gegnern anhand von Quellenzitaten betrachtet. In Kapitel vier wird sodann der Fall "kollektiven Widerstands" einer katholischen Dorfgemeinschaft im Zuge des Schulstreits auf Grundlage aller verfügbaren Quellen in Ursachen, Verlauf und Folgen dargestellt. Im Schlussteil, werden zentrale Fragen, die sich durch die vorliegende Arbeit ergeben haben, kurz diskutiert und neue Forschungsfragen aufgezeigt.

Viele Historiker, die sich mit der Erforschung des Nationalsozialismus, gerade auch sozialgeschichtlich beschäftigen, stellen die These auf, dass die katholische Bevölkerung in Deutschland diejenige war, welche sich am wenigsten von der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung beeinflussen hat lassen. Weiter die These, ob es das katholische Milieu war, aus der sich die geringsten Wähler der NSDAP gewinnen ließen. Cornelia Rauh – Kühne behauptet, dass das Kirchenvolk als „geschlossene Front“ gegen die NSDAP auftritt, was besonders auf das soziale Gefüge des katholischen Milieus zurückgeführt werden kann. Dieser Meinung schließt sich Jürgen W. Falter größtenteils an, auch im Hinblick auf die Auswertung der Wahlergebnisse der katholischen Zentrumspartei. Die Hausarbeit soll mit diesem Hintergrund in erster Linie behandeln, wie die katholische Propaganda im Dritten Reich genau diese Thesen unterstützte, in dem sie anhand ihrer Kirchenzeitungen und Bistumsblätter Propaganda gegen die nationalsozialistische Diktatur betrieb. Eine Nebenfrage, die in diesem Zusammenhang bearbeitet werden soll: Bedeutete das Reichskonkordat einen Einschnitt in die katholische Propaganda? Um das Augenmerk auch auf ein katholisches Sozialmilieu zu lenken, wird als Quelle die Kirchenzeitung für das Erzbistum Köln (welche bis 1937 noch „Kirchenblatt der Herz – Jesu Pfarre Mühlheim – Ruhr“ hieß) herangezogen. Hauptsächlich auf das Jahr 1933 und die damit verbundene Reichstagswahl am 05.März 1933. Außerdem werden zusätzlich Artikel herangezogen, die seitens der Kirchenzeitung gegen das nationalsozialistische Leitbild propagieren. Hier zum Beispiel, die Verteidigung des heiligen Sakraments der Ehe.
