Katolisitas begitu mendalam, padat, dan luas; maka tidak mungkin dituangkan dalam sebuah buku yang sedang Anda pegang ini. Pembahasan dalam buku ini sangatlah terbatas. Tujuannya hanya mendorong mahasiswauntuk memahami hal-hal pokok tentang ajaran Gereja Katolik. Karena bagaimana pun mengikuti adagium St. Agustinus dari Hippo, “percayalah untuk bisa mengerti (crede ut intelligas).” Dalam pernyataan Anselmus dari Canterbury (c. 1033-1109): “Saya tidak berusaha untuk tidak memahami agar saya dapat percaya, melainkan saya percaya agar saya dapat mengerti.” Para mahasiswa mempelajari kebenaran supaya percaya. Demikian juga kematangan iman semakin berkembang tahap demi tahap, dari tahap anak-anak menjadi dewasa. Iman kristiani memusatkan perhatian pada “isi pokok tertentu, yaitu pesan keselamatan yang dinyatakan lewat Sabda dan karya Yesus Kristus. Sedangkan perkembangan iman menyoroti bagaimana seorang memahami dan mengungkapkan kembali isi iman tersebut saat ia menjadi dewasa dalam hubungan dan interaksinya dengan lingkungan.” Dengan bersikap kritis terhadap agamanya, mahasiswa tidak terjebak dalam sikap intoleransi, fundamentalisme, fanatisme, radikalisme, bahkan terorisme. Karena bagaimanapun pula agama mengajarkan kasih, cinta, persaudaraan, damai dan sejahtera. “Allah telah menciptakan kita untuk saling memahami, saling bekerjasama, hidup sebagai saudara dan saudari yang saling mengasihi” (Dokumen Abu Dhabi, 4 Februari 2019). Gereja Katolik mendorong umat katolik untuk berdialog dengan dunia GS, 85), dengan orang-orang yang berbeda agama (AG, 16) dan orang-orang kristiani lain, entah Gereja-gereja Timur (UR, 14-18), maupun Gereja-gereja Barat yang terpisah dari Gereja Katolik selama reformasi (UR, 19-23). Perlu diketahui dialog dengan agama-agama bukan kristiani disebut “antaragama” atau “antariman.” Sedangkan dialog antara Gereja Katolik dengan Gereja-gereja kristen misalnya Persekutuan Gereja-gereja Indonesia (PGI) disebut “ekumene” atau “interkonfesional. Karena kepercayaan kepada Kristus dan pembaptisan menciptakan kesatuan yang sejati, meskipun tidak sempurna di antara semua orang kristiani (LG, 15). Mahasiswa hidup dalam masyarakat yang ditandai dengan pluralisme budaya dan agama. Demikian juga dalam zaman globalisasi, muncul pelbagai ideologi simpang siur yang membingungkan. Bisa saja muncul sikap skeptisme. Kebenaran agama diragukan, khususnya di bidang moral dan religius. Manusia skeptis mengalami ketidakpastian mengenai apapun. Maka buku ini membantu mahasiswa untuk meningkatkan kematangan iman kristiani dalam mengahadapi pelbagai arus pemikiran yang menggoyahkan iman kristiani sejati. Mereka harus melewati tahap iman ketika masih kanak-kanak. Maka mampu menafsirkan kehidupan iman sebagai perubahan terus-menerus untuk menjadi semakin serupa dengan Kristus. Untuk menjadi matang dalam iman tidak cukup hanya tekun berdoa dan mereka yakin kehidupan sakramental, tetapi justru perlu dibantu untuk memperdalam pemahanan mengenai wahyu dan iman kristiani. Perlu ditegaskan ulang bahwa iman tanpa akal budi bukanlah iman yang manusiawi. Demikian juga akal budi tanpa iman merupakan akal yang tidak mendatangkan keselamatan. Buku ini menegaskan kepada mahasiswa bahwa iman sejati bagaimanapun selalu bergandengan dengan nalar. Pengahayatan iman ditempatkan dalam kesadaran akan keseluruhan dan keutuhan hidup. Iman kristiani bukan berada di samping atau di pinggir kehidupan. Iman memang merupakan iman pribadi. Akan tetapi iman pribadi sekaligus adalah iman Gereja Katolik. Nah, buku ini boleh dipandang sebagai katekese orang dewasa untuk memperdalam imannya. Semoga buku ini dapat membantu pembacanya agar memiliki iman yang hidup, berkembang dan penuh daya (KHK, 773).
