African nationalist leaders used to joke about a spell in a British colonial prison as being an essential rite of passage in the struggle for independence and leadership of the new state. This is the memoir of a district officer in Northern Rhodesia, from his arrival in the territory in 1944 through the period leading to Zambian independence. It includes a spell as Kenneth Kaunda's "gaoler", during which a personal friendship grew up and flourished, and ends with an appointment to the President's Office in post-independence Zambia. This is the story of British colonial administration and the daily round of a District Officer's life during the nationalist struggle and the formative period of an independent African state and of a close and enduring friendship.

Wildlife Between Empire And Nation In Twentieth Century Africa written by Jeff Schauer and has been published by Palgrave Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-17 with History categories.

This book traces the emergence of wildlife policy in colonial eastern and central Africa over the course of a century. Spanning from imperial conquest through the consolidation of colonial rule, the rise of nationalism, and the emergence of neocolonial and neoliberal institutions, this book shows how these fundamental themes of the twentieth century shaped the relationships between humans and animals in what are today Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Malawi. A set of key themes emerges—changing administrative forms, militarization, nationalism, science, and a relentlessly broadening constituency for wildlife. Jeff Schauer illuminates how each of these developments were contingent upon the colonial experience, and how they fashioned a web of structures for understanding and governing wildlife in Africa—one which has lasted into the twenty-first century.

While Northern Rhodesia was preparing for independence as the Republic of Zambia in 1964, impoverished villages in the remote north east of the country were divided by a bitter conflict fuelled by apparently irreconcilable political and religious convictions. This book describes the origin of the dispute and how it led to skirmishes, defiance of authority, massacre, torture and displacement: a previously unreported mutiny. It is as such an important contribution to Zambian history, with a significant proportion of the material being published for the first time. The author was a district commissioner at Isoka during the time of the massacre and was personally involved in the peace settlement. He argues that the situation need not have escalated had the authorities acted to prevent it; and that for different reasons, both the colonial government and its independent successor tried to distort the gravity of what occurred.

From 1942 to 1950, nearly twenty thousand Poles found refuge from the horrors of war-torn Europe in camps within Britain’s African colonies, including Uganda, Tanganyika, Kenya and Northern and Southern Rhodesia. On the Edges of Whiteness tells their improbable story, tracing the manifold, complex relationships that developed among refugees, their British administrators, and their African neighbors. While intervening in key historical debates across academic disciplines, this book also gives an accessible and memorable account of survival and dramatic cultural dislocation against the backdrop of global conflict.
