This theory and practice book is aimed at first-year students of Phonetics and Phonology. It is designed for use on twelve- or fourteen-week course on English Phonetics and Phonology of sort taught in the first year of many English Language and Linguistics degree. Students on such courses can struggle with English Phonetics and Phonology. This book attempts to show students why we need to know about Phonetics and Phonology, if we are interested in language and our knowledge of it, as well as introducing the main units and concepts we require to describe speech sounds accurately. It is based on a book I wrote which was published in the previous year. The book, which had the title Fluency in English Pronunciation has now been revised and updated. Since I feel that this book still has some use, I have taken many great works from many experts in (English) Phonetics and Phonology, and hope that it will be useful to students in getting to grips with all matters in English Phonetics and Phonology.

Excerpt from Elementary Phonetics: English, French, German; Their Theory and Practical Application in the Classroom This treatise forms part of a series of hooks dealing with the teaching of modern languages according to the so-called "New Method" or "Reform," two of which have already appeared, viz., First Steps in German, and A German Grammar. The present volume is intended to serve as an introduction to the study of English, French, and German phonetics. It gives in the first place the necessary phonetic explanations and hints for the use of the English, French and German Sound Charts which we have drawn up, and which are intended for classroom purposes. Though not infrequently going beyond these explanations and hints, it remains elementary in treatment and substance, giving merely a good working knowledge of the subject; and the student who is desirous of increasing that knowledge, is strongly recommended to study one or more of the books mentioned on page 162 ff. The chief features in the arrangement of the subject-matter are the following: - (1) The description of the speech organs and their functions contains only what is essential and simple. (2) With regard to the speech sounds, i.e., vowels and consonants, we have in the first place tried to give a clear idea of their production and nature. Generative Phonology written by Michael Kenstowicz and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-10 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Generative Phonology: Description and Theory provides a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of generative phonology and the applications of these concepts in further study of phonological structure. This book is composed of 10 chapters and begins with a survey of phonology in the overall model of generative grammar and introduces the principles of phonetics to. The subsequent chapters introduce the fundamental concept of a phonological rule that relates an underlying representation to a phonetic representation and this concept is applied to the analysis of morphophonemic alternation. These topics are followed by a presentation of phonological sketches of four diverse languages in terms of rules relating underlying and phonetic representations, as well as the major corpus-internal principles and techniques of phonological analysis. The discussion then shifts to the theoretical aspects of phonology, the various degrees of abstractness, and the proposals to limit the divergence between underlying and phonetic representation. Other chapters deal with some of the issues revolving around the representation of sounds and the various hypotheses as to how phonological rules apply to convert the underlying representation to the phonetic representation, particularly the kinds of considerations that motivate rule-ordering statements. The last chapters explore the major notational devices commonly employed in the formulation of phonological rules and the role of syntactic and lexical information in controlling the application of phonological rules. This book is intended primarily for linguistics and phonologists.
