The Music of Central Asia surveys the rich and diverse musical life of a region that was once at the center of the trans-Eurasian Silk Road trade and that has now reemerged as a crucial arena of global geopolitics. This beautiful and informative volume offers a resource for Central Asians to learn about the musical heritage of their region and a detailed introduction to this heritage for readers and listeners worldwide. The Music of Central Asia balances "insider" and "outsider" perspectives with contributions by 27 authors from 14 countries. A companion website provides access to some 175 audio and video examples, listening guides and study questions, and transliterations and translations of the performed texts. The generously illustrated text is supplemented with boxes and side bars, musician profiles, and an illustrated glossary of musical instruments. The Music of Central Asia targets a broad, non-specialist readership, while specialists will find it an indispensable resource. The book is divided into four parts: an overview of the region's music and musical instruments; sections on "The Nomadic World" and "The World of Sedentary-Dwellers," which explore music and musical life in the context of Central Asia's two great axes of civilization; and "Central Asia in the Age of Globalization," whose focus is the future of the past, or how musical heritage is being revitalized and reimagined in the contested cultural landscape of contemporary Central Asia. The Music of Central Asia can be read systematically to build comprehensive knowledge about interlinked topics—or used as a handy reference on specific musical styles, repertoires, and traditions. For instructors, the book's 35 chapters offer ample material for a semester-long course, while groups of chapters can serve as a module in courses devoted to broader topics in music, history, and culture.

One of The Telegraph's Best Music Books 2011 Alex Ross's award-winning international bestseller, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, has become a contemporary classic, establishing Ross as one of our most popular and acclaimed cultural historians. Listen to This, which takes its title from a beloved 2004 essay in which Ross describes his late-blooming discovery of pop music, showcases the best of his writing from more than a decade at The New Yorker. These pieces, dedicated to classical and popular artists alike, are at once erudite and lively. In a previously unpublished essay, Ross brilliantly retells hundreds of years of music history—from Renaissance dances to Led Zeppelin—through a few iconic bass lines of celebration and lament. He vibrantly sketches canonical composers such as Schubert, Verdi, and Brahms; gives us in-depth interviews with modern pop masters such as Björk and Radiohead; and introduces us to music students at a Newark high school and indie-rock hipsters in Beijing. Whether his subject is Mozart or Bob Dylan, Ross shows how music expresses the full complexity of the human condition. Witty, passionate, and brimming with insight, Listen to This teaches us how to listen more closely.

Mongolian Film Music written by Lucy M. Rees and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-03 with Music categories.

In 1936 the Mongolian socialist government decreed the establishment of a film industry with the principal aim of disseminating propaganda to the largely nomadic population. The government sent promising young rural Mongolian musicians to Soviet conservatoires to be trained formally as composers. On their return they utilised their traditional Mongolian musical backgrounds and the musical skills learned during their studies to compose scores to the 167 propaganda films produced by the state film studio between 1938 and 1990. Lucy M. Rees provides an overview of the rich mosaic of music genres that appeared in these film soundtracks, including symphonic music influenced by Western art music, modified forms of Mongolian traditional music, and a new genre known as ’professional music’ that combined both symphonic and Mongolian traditional characteristics. Case studies of key composers and film scores are presented, demonstrating the influence of cultural policy on film music and showing how film scores complemented the ideological message of the films. There are discussions of films that celebrate the 1921 Revolution that led to Mongolia becoming a socialist nation, those that foreshadowed the 1990 Democratic Revolution that drew the socialist era to a close, and the diverse range of films and scores produced after 1990 in the aftermath of the socialist regime.

Music Sound And Architecture In Islam written by Michael Frishkopf and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-13 with Architecture categories.

Tracing the connections between music making and built space in both historical and contemporary times, Music, Sound, and Architecture in Islam brings together domains of intellectual reflection that have rarely been in dialogue to promote a greater understanding of the centrality of sound production in constructed environments in Muslim religious and cultural expression. Representing the fields of ethnomusicology, anthropology, art history, architecture, history of architecture, religious studies, and Islamic studies, the volume's contributors consider sonic performances ranging from poetry recitation to art, folk, popular, and ritual musics—as well as religious expressions that are not usually labeled as "music" from an Islamic perspective—in relation to monumental, vernacular, ephemeral, and landscape architectures; interior design; decoration and furniture; urban planning; and geography. Underscoring the intimate relationship between traditional Muslim sonic performances, such as the recitation of the Qur'an or devotional songs, and conventional Muslim architectural spaces, from mosques and Sufi shrines to historic aristocratic villas, gardens, and gymnasiums, the book reveals Islam as an ideal site for investigating the relationship between sound and architecture, which in turn proves to be an innovative and significant angle from which to explore Muslim cultures.
