The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have both agreed that to have the best start, babies and mothers must be kept together after delivery and beyond. While keeping mother and baby together does not always happen, evidence has shown that placing the baby skin-to-skin with its mother after delivery and delaying unnecessary interventions will quickly stabilize the baby's temperature (thermo regulation), will support glucose control, will aid in initiating breastfeeding, and maternal-infant bonding. The project focused on whether providing skin-to-skin contact opportunities, especially after birth, would result in better clinical outcomes for both mother and baby. The primary investigator surveyed 60 women, and completed a retrospective chart review to obtain clinical data and identify the mothers and infants who were separated or not separated. Then the primary investigator analyzed the data using descriptive statistics, chi-square test of independence, test statistics, and tests of between-subject effects. Significant statistical difference was identified between the two groups in the following areas: mother's pain level (p =.002), infant's temperature (p =.037), breastfeeding (p = .001), and in hospital prenatal education influencing skin-to-skin contact (p =.015). Due to these results, a new policy of not separating mother and baby after delivery was approved by the medical staff and a new nursing position was created to benefit mother and baby called a Transition nurse. The position was specifically designed to aide skin-to-skin contact after delivery, initiation of breastfeeding and transitioning the infant and mother together the entire time they are on Labor and Delivery.

WHO and UNICEF jointly developed this global strategy to focus world attention on the impact that feeding practices have on the nutritional status, growth and development, health, and thus the very survival of infants and young children. The strategy is the result of a comprehensive two-year participatory process. It is based on the evidence of nutrition's significance in the early months and years of life, and of the crucial role that appropriate feeding practices play in achieving optimal health outcomes. The strategy is intended as a guide for action; it identifies interventions with a proven positive impact; it emphasizes providing mothers and families the support they need to carry out their crucial roles, and it explicitly defines the obligations and responsibilities in this regards of governments, international organizations, and other concerned parties.
