Aangrijpende verhalen over hoe Sant'Egidio het leven van twaalf 'gewone' mensen veranderde. De lekenbeweging Gemeenschap van Sant'Egidio, die in 1968 werd opgericht in Rome, behoort tot de meest dynamische organisaties in de katholieke kerk. Ze telt 70.000 medewerkers in meer dan zeventig landen. De kracht van Sant'Egidio kun je in één woord samenvatten: authenticiteit. De gemeenschap ziet zichzelf niet als dé weg, maar als een van de vele wegen die naar een inspirerend leven leiden. Ze toont aan dat ondanks de crisis in de kerk de boodschap van het evangelie nog altijd brandend actueel is en mensen kan inspireren tot een levenslang engagement. Auteur Koenraad De Wolf maakte een wereldreis op zoek naar de ziel van Sant'Egidio. In twaalf hoofdstukken laat hij een gewone man of vrouw vertellen hoe zijn of haar leven 'een keerpunt' kende na kennismaking met de beweging: van de guerrillaleider in Mozambique die een vredesakkoord tekende tot de aidswees uit Malawi die besmette jongeren begeleidt. Aanvullend geven verantwoordelijken van de beweging telkens hun visie op de toekomst. Fotograaf Herman Ricour verzorgde de indringende fotografie in het boek.

This book covers various aspects of New Chinese Migration in Suriname in the 1990s and early 2000s. It is an ethnography of New Chinese Migrants in the context of South- South migration, but also a first ethnography of Chinese in Suriname, as well as an analysis of Surinamese ethnic discourse and ethnopolitics. Starting in the 1990s, renewed immigration from China changed the dynamics of the Surinamese Chinese community, which developed from a Hakka enclave to a culturally and linguistically diverse, modern Chinese migrant group. Local positioning strategies of Chinese had always depended on ethnic entrepreneurship and political participation, but were now complicated by anti-immigrant sentiments.

Sharing certain assumptions but differing in theory and practice, both Columbia School linguistics (CS) and Cognitive Grammar (CG) have increasingly supported their analyses with quantitative evidence. Citation of individual sentences, in isolation or in context, has been supplemented with counts of linguistic forms in texts, informant questionnaires, and perception tests. The present volume, continuing a dialogue between CS and CG, offers six such qualitative-quantitative studies, one on Afrikaans and five on Dutch. Topics include (a) demonstratives, (b) pragmatic particles and imperatives, (c) a puzzling “dismissive” idiom, (d) progressive aspect, and (e) indirect objects. While CS is better suited for analyzing relatively closed systems (e.g. tense, pronouns), CG provides more insight into the vagaries of the amorphous lexicon. The author also offers personal remarks on “linguistics as a path” and discusses how in one case a wrong prediction reflects his dual role as both linguist and student of Dutch as a foreign language.
