Es gibt kleine und kleinste Orte, helle und dunkle, schöne und hässliche, ruhige und belebte, verlassene und vergessene, rätselhafte und auch mystische Orte. Martinskirchen, der Ort, in dem die Ich-Erzählerin geboren wurde, hat von allem ein bisschen. Schon von weitem sieht man zwei Dinge: das Barockschloss und die Kirche, um die sich die Geschichten vergangener Jahrzehnte und Jahrhunderte ranken. Und mit beidem ist auch sie eng verbunden. Kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg geboren, hat sie trotz manchem Schweren eine beinahe unbeschwerte frühe Kindheit genossen. Die Familie war bitterarm. Sie waren Flüchtlinge. Das Schloss, von seinen Besitzern verlassen, bildete die Kulisse für die kindliche Fantasie des kleinen, blonden Mädchens, die durch die Märchenerzählungen ihrer Großmutter noch befeuert wurde. Ja, die Märchen, die waren ihnen geblieben. Wenigstens sie. Dagegen flößte dem Kind die Kirche mit dem Friedhof und dem steinernen Sühnekreuz davor eher Furcht ein. Aber wie es so auf dem Dorf ist, alle gingen in die Kirche: Zu Taufen, zu Hochzeiten und zu Begräbnissen. Und was sonst noch im Dorf geschah vor 1945 im Schloss und auf dem Rittergut, aber vor allem danach, als die neuen Herren die Dinge in ihre Hand nahmen und wie sie sie anpackten, wie es heute dort aussieht und wie es um das schöne Barockschloss und die Kirche bestellt ist, das erfährt der Leser/die Leserin in diesem Buch.

In den Jahren 1925 bis 1945 sehen wir die Kinder von Friedrich und Clara Lenau heranwachsen und ihr Leben in die eigenen Hände nehmen. Auf dem Schloss versucht sich Emma Priesnitz als Mal- und Fotokünstlerin. Ihre Vernissagen sind beliebt, wobei ihre Schwester Charlotte mit ihrer Freundin Constanze, die in Berlin gemeinsam ein Dessous-Geschäft betreiben, bei ihren Besuchen in Elbkirchen ihr großstädtisches Esprit versprühen. Ende der zwanziger Jahre erstarkt die NSDAP. An den Stammtischen diskutiert man Hitlers Buch "Mein Kampf", Themen der Wirtschaft und Politik. Die meisten Dorfbewohner finden Gefallen an seinen Reden und Versprechungen. In jedem Wohnzimmer hängt ein Porträt des Führers, auf der Straße wird der Arm für Volk und Vaterland gestreckt und schon bald gibt es eine Ortsgruppe der NSDAP in Elbkirchen. Lenau und sein Kollege treten in die Partei ein. Arne Priesnitz, Sohn des Gutsverwalters, besucht eine der Adolf-Hitler-Schulen und wird zu Beginn des Krieges eingezogen. Richard Lenau macht als Ingenieur in der Rüstung Karriere. Während des Krieges muss man in Elbkirchen zusammenrücken. Zuerst kommen Mitarbeiter der Junkerswerke Halberstadt, deren Abteilung nach Borwitz ausgelagert wird. Nach ihnen Flüchtlinge aus den Ostgebieten, Wlassow-Truppen und schließlich die Amerikaner und Russen. Sie treffen sich in Torgau an der Elbe. Lenau begibt sich aus Angst vor den Russen mit seiner Familie auf die Flucht Richtung Westen. Die Ereignisse hält er in seinem Tagebuch fest. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Elbkirchen im Juni 1945 stellt er fest, es ist nichts mehr wie es war.

The Chechen War was supposed to be over in 1996 after the first Yeltsin campaign, but in the summer of 1999, the new Putin government decided, in their own words, to 'do the job properly'.
