Lesi patologis sering kali berkembang di rongga mulut dan struktur jaringan di sekitarnya. Dokter gigi umum merupakan dokter gigi yang berhadapan dengan pasien di lini pertama sehingga mempunyai tanggung jawab profesional dalam mengenali lesi patologis rongga mulut sebelum melakukan rujukan ke dokter spesialis yang lebih berkompeten. Oleh karena itu, dokter gigi umum perlu memiliki kemampuan dalam melakukan identifikasi lesi patologis secara komprehensif berdasarkan anamnesis, pemeriksaan klinis dan pemeriksaan penunjang apabila diperlukan untuk menentukan suatu diagnosis. Beberapa lesi patologis di rongga mulut yang disebabkan oleh inflamasi, seperti abses, granuloma, slerosing osteitis, osteomielitis, perikoronitis memiliki beberapa gambaran klinis yang serupa sehingga diperlukan panduan dalam menentukan diagnosa dengan melihat gambaran radiologi dan histopatologi. Selain lesi inflamasi, dalam buku ini juga disajikan klasifikasi kista rahang menurut WHO, jenis-jenis tumor jinak dan neoplasma maligna/ tumor ganas pada rongga mulut disertai penjelasan gambaran klinis, patogenesis, gambaran histopatologi, gambaran radiologi, dan tatalaksana yang dapat dilakukan, Pemeriksaan radiografi memiliki peranan penting dalam menentukan apakah gambaran tersebut merupakan suatu anatomi normal, lesi atau artefak. Pemeriksaan histopatologi ditujukan untuk mengetahui perubahan yang terjadi pada struktur jaringan abnormal secara mikroskopis guna membantu dalam menegakkan diagnosa. Flare up setelah perawatan Endodontik atau yang lebih dikenal sebagai perawatan saluran akar atau setelah dilakukan suatu restorasi dapat terjadi dan keadaan ini sangat mengganggu baik untuk penderita yang mengalami maupun dokter gigi yang merawatnya.
