New York-based artist Kelley Walker hacks advertising and displays its inner workings as art. His large-scale prints appropriate iconic cultural images, digitally altering them to expose their underlying agendas. In "Black Star Press: Black Star, Star Press Star" (2004), Walker combined nondigital collage processes to reference abstract painting: He smeared newspaper photos of the Birmingham race riots with melted chocolate and toothpaste, scanned them into a computer and made photographic prints from the results. Such hybridized work is neither quite post-Pop nor just appropriation. In the past few years, Walker has emerged as one of the most innovative and rigorous young artists in New York and has become much in demand not only for his solo work but for his collaborations with fellow New Yorker Wade Guyton. This monograph is a valuable introduction to Walker's technical processes, and essays by maverick critic and curator Bob Nickas and writer Scott Rothkopf lend much insight into his practice.

With nods to artistic influences ranging from Andy Warhol to Jackson Pollock and Sigmar Polke, Walker?s work interrogates the ways a single image can migrate into a number of cultural contexts. Throughout his career, Walker has explored the manipulation and repurposing of images in order to destabilize issues of identity, race, class, sexuality, and politics. Often using such technologies as 3-D modeling software and laser-cutting, the artist works in a variety of media, including photography, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture. In an era of digital reproduction, Walker?s work draws attention to popular culture?s perpetual consumption and reuse of images. 00Exhibition: Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, United States (16.09. - 31.12.2016).

Since the early 2000s, Kelley Walker has developed a body of work that alters and subverts some of the most ubiquitous cultural, political, and social signifiers of our contemporary society.Using the potency of advertising strategies, his work interrogates the ways a single image can migrate into a number of cultural contexts, how meaning constantly shifts, and how everything and everyone is subject to reinvention -- just as the iconic recycling symbol he uses in numerous manifestations might ironically suggest. He explores authorship and authenticity, the manipulation and repurposing of images and material from the public domain in order to destabilize issues of identity, race, class, sexuality, consumerism, and politics.Production, transaction, analogue/digital conversion, and distribution processes are central to his practice: 'I am working with a very complex way of producing objects that conflates and compresses and deflates all different types of modes of production in one object.'This comprehensive monograph is published as the editorial sequel to Kelley Walker's Direct Drive solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (autumn 2016).Designed by NORM (Zurich), it features Walker's different bodies of works to date (the Black Star Press, Brick Paintings, Recycling Signs, and Schema series, among others) alongside his most recent pieces.Edited and introduced by Jeffrey Uslip, Direct Drive exhibition's curator, it brings together new essays by MoMA's Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints Christophe Cherix, Le Consortium's Co-Director Anne Pontegnie, and University of Southern California's Professor Suzanne Hudson.

Founded in 2004, Guyton\Walker--the artist duo of Wade Guyton (born 1972) and Kelley Walker (born 1969)--is a partnership that has remained virtually without parallel in contemporary art, in that both artists work and exhibit individually. This volume examines all facets of their output, both singly and together. Essays by Sam Pulitzer and Quinn Latimer discuss individual authorship and joint techniques, while Jack Bankowsky's text examines Guyton\Walker within a broad art-historical context. Yilmaz Dziewior's introductory essay outlines the distinctive concept of the Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition this book accompanies, and addresses the relationship between individual and joint artistic practices. Each section on the three artistic positions features photographs of the installation in Kunsthaus Bregenz.

Chelsea Arnold is not a Chadwell, as her mother incessantly reminds her. And if she doesn't learn to play the game, she'll never see a dime of her new step-daddy's money. So Chelsea puts on the act and dutifully follows the Chadwell family rules: everyone has to work in the family bar to learn life lessons. Little do they know, she already knows the biggest lesson of all: the best thing to be is underestimated. Then they'll never see you coming. And in a few more weeks when she's tucked enough cash away, she'll be out of here, leaving her new family and her washed-up mother behind, because all Chelsea wants is freedom. Inheritance be damned. But when her step-father learns he has a son he never knew about, it throws her plan off the tracks. While another son and an ex-wife sharing her husband's affections are too much for Chelsea's mother to handle and she heads for the hills, the rough around the edges Warren “Ware” Chadwell is enough to tempt Chelsea to stay. Despite the fact that all he has to offer is everything she's determined to shy away from, the boy from the wrong side of the tracks knows how to push her buttons in all the right ways, no matter how wrong it is.
