Kentucky's magnificent capitol building was constructed in the industrious early 20th century, considered the age of conspicuous consumption. Architect Frank Mills Andrews designed the striking 403-foot-long Beaux Arts edifice, faced with sublime Indiana limestone and Vermont granite and surrounded with 70 monolithic columns. Nearly five years of construction followed the August 14, 1905, ground-breaking, and an estimated 20,000 proud Kentuckians and dignitaries were present for the pomp and circumstance that surrounded the June 2, 1910, dedication of the $1.8-million "New Kentucky Home." Kentucky's landmark capitol building forever changed the landscape of Frankfort, its capital city, while presenting the commonwealth a monument to its progress since statehood in 1792.

It is rich in historic associations, is a complete epitome of Old Kentucky life and manners, and is surrounded by all the attractions of a region which, for pastoral beauty and fertility, is unsurpassed upon the face of the globe. Almost in its suburbs is the site of Bryant's Station, so celebrated for the siege it sustained at the hands of the British and the Indians a hundred years ago; noted old Boonsborough, and the tragic battle field of Blue Licks arc not far distant, and within half an hour's ride from the city stands the highest pier bridge in the world in the midst of the wild and magnificent scenery of that wonderfully picturesque river - the battlemented Kentucky. Lexington, the seat of justice of Fayette County, and the social and commercial capital of the famous "Blue Grass Region," is situated in what Bancroft styles, "the unrivaled valley of Elkhorn creek," and is, by rail, ninety-four miles east of Louisville and eighty miles south of Cincinnati. Eighteenth-century Kentucky beckoned to hunters, surveyors, and settlers from the mid-Atlantic coast colonies as a source of game, land, and new trade opportunities. Unfortunately, the Appalachian Mountains formed a daunting barrier that left only two primary roads to this fertile Eden. The steep grades and dense forests of the Cumberland Gap rendered the Wilderness Road impassable to wagons, and the northern route extending from southeastern Pennsylvania became the first main thoroughfare to the rugged West, winding along the Ohio River and linking Maysville to Lexington in the heart of the Bluegrass.
