In recent years the constitutional landscape of Southeast Asia has changed tremendously. Against a worldwide background of liberalization, globalization, and democratization, states in the region have begun to alter their constitutions, reinforcing human rights provisions, and putting in place institutional safeguards, such as constitutional courts and human rights commissions. On closer examination, however, the picture is very complex, with constitutional developments differing greatly between states. This book explores a range of current constitutional developments in the different states of Southeast Asia through a distinct political lens. Drawing on comparative and single case studies, it considers various constitutional areas, including constitution drafting, human rights, legal safeguards and the continuing role of the military, sets constitutional developments in the wider political and historical context of each country, and makes comparisons both with Western democracies and with other developing regions. Forging Islamic Power and Place charts the nineteenth-century rise of a vast network of Islamic scholars stretching across Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean to Arabia. Following the political and military collapse of the tiny Sultanate of Patani in what is now southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, a displaced community of scholars led by Shaykh Dā’ūd bin ‘Abd Allāh al-Faṭānī regrouped in Mecca. In the years that followed, al-Faṭānī composed more than forty works that came to form the basis for a new, text-based type of Islamic practice. Via a network of scholars, students, and scribes, al-Faṭānī’s writings made their way back to Southeast Asia, becoming the core texts of emerging pondok (Islamic schools) throughout the region. Islamic scholars thus came to be the primary power brokers in the construction of a new moral community, setting forth an intellectual wave that spurred cultural identity, literacy, and a religious practice that grew ever more central to daily life. In Forging Islamic Power and Place, Francis R. Bradley analyzes the important role of this vibrant Patani knowledge network in the formation of Islamic institutions of learning in Southeast Asia. He makes use of an impressive range of sources, including official colonial documents, traveler accounts, missionary writings, and above all a trove of handwritten manuscripts in Malay and Arabic, what remains of one of the most fertile zones of knowledge production anywhere in the Islamic world at the time. Writing against prevailing notions of Southeast Asia as the passive recipient of the Islamic traditions of the Middle East, Bradley shows how a politically marginalized community engineered its own cultural renaissance via the moral virility of the Islamic scholarly tradition and the power of the written word. He highlights how, in an age of rising colonial power, these knowledge producers moved largely unnoticed and unhindered between Southeast Asia and the Middle East carrying out sweeping cultural and religious change. His focus on Thailand’s so-called “deep south,” which has been marginalized in scholarly studies until recent times, helps lay the groundwork for a new generation of scholarship on the region and furthers our understanding of the present-day crisis in southern Thailand. The study of Islam in Southeast Asia has been most often relegated to the realm of religious studies, and historians have considered the development of the nation as the single-most important historiographical problem in the region. By focusing on the role of human agency and the logistics of knowledge transmission, this book transforms our understanding of the long and complex history of the flow of religious knowledge between the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Abandoned housing projects is one the major problems in housing industry in Peninsular Malaysia. The reasons leading to this problem are many. This catastrophe has caused multifarious problems to the stakeholders, particularly the purchasers who become the aggrieved parties. To date, there is no effective and once-and-for-all means to face the problems of abandoned housing projects. One of the factors which causes abandonment of housing projects in Peninsular Malaysia, is the lack of political will on part of the government to adopt an affirmative better housing delivery system such as the ‘full build then sell system’ and the introduction of a housing development insurance to face the problems of housing abandonment. This book provides in-depth analyses of the terms and conditions of the statutory standard sale and purchase agreements as enshrined in Schedules G, H, I and J of the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Regulations 1989. The objective of this book, among others, is to identify the weaknesses of the terms of the agreements, if any, which may have contributed to the problem of abandoned housing projects and their consequential troubles. As comparative analyses, the terms and conditions of the sale and purchase agreements as applicable and enforced in the Republic of Singapore and New South Wales, Australia, are chosen. The purpose of these comparative analyses is to find the terms and conditions in these foreign jurisdictions’ agreements which can be learned and adopted in the statutory standard sale and purchase agreements (Schedules G, H, I and J). It is also for the betterment of the Malaysian housing industry as a whole, and to protect the interests of the stakeholders, in particular the purchasers as against the problems of housing abandonment and its consequences.

Dalam buku ini, penyusun berupaya semaksimal mungkin menghindari itu, sehingga harapan bahwa sejarah itu memang asyik dapat tercapai dengan baik. Jika materi sejarah telah mengasyikkan, telah mengenakkan, atau telah menyenangkan, maka isi dari materi itupun akan dapat ditangkap dengan mudah oleh peserta didik. Seterusnya, jika peserta didik dapat menangkap materi dengan mudah, maka harapan kita selaku guru sejarah, nilai-nilai kesejarahan Indonesia akan mudah terinternalisasi dalam kepribadian peserta didik, sehingga tujuan membentuk generasi Indonesia yang cinta NKRI, cinta budaya bangsa, cinta nilai-nilai keindonesiaan, dan cinta pada peradaban bangsanya akan tercapai. Dengan itu, akan tercipta kepribadian bangsa seutuhnya.
