"P. Hofstede de Groot (1802-1886) was van 1829 tot 1872 als hoogleraar theologie verbonden aan de universiteit van Groningen. Hij beperkte zich echter niet tot zijn leeropdracht. Hij werkte daarnaast van 1833 tot 1861 als schoolopziener en hij was veertien jaar voorzitter van de eerste nationale onderwijzersbond. De Groot en zijn vrienden, de zogenaamde 'Groninger godgeleerden', bemoeiden zich actief met alle uitdagingen waarvoor de Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk zich zag gesteld: de relatie tussen kerk en staat, kerkbouw en gemeenteopbouw in grotestadswijken en veenkoloniën, de onderwijsstrijd, armoedebestrijding, wijkverpleging en kinderbescherming, vrouwenemancipatie, zending en politiek in de Nederlandse koloniën en afschaffing van de slavernij.
