Banyak aspek sosial dari kehidupan kita tidak lagi menjadi perhatian agama. Agama menjadi sangat kerdil dan hanya menjadi salah satu mata pelajaran di sekolah-sekolah, atau hanya menjadi pengisi salah satu acara televisi. Kebanyakan guru agama hanya fasih bicara soal-soal akidah dan ibadah dalam pengertian tata cara mengatur hubungan hamba dengan Tuhannya. Sedangkan hubungan hamba dengan sesama dan masyarakatnya luput dari agenda kerja mereka. Buku Kesalehan Sosial di Balik Ketaatan Ritual, membahas Rukun Islam dengan pemaknaan dan pendekatan sosial. Tujuannya adalah agar tumbuh kesadaran bahwa di balik setiap Rukun Islam terkandung makna-makna penting bagi terciptanya kesalehan sosial. Ketaatan seorang muslim pada Rukun Islam haruslah melahirkan kesalehan sosial. Sejatinya buku ini hendak menegaskan beberapa poin berikut: Pertama, lebih dari 200 ayat, Al-Qur’an tidak menyebut langit kecuali dikaitkan langsung dengan bumi. Dari sini dapat disimpulkan bahwa langit (simbol akhirat dan hak-hak Allah) dan bumi (lambang dunia dan hak-hak hamba) merupakan dua sisi untuk satu hakikat yang sama, bukan dua dunia yang terpisah dan tak saling berhubungan. Kedua, tauhid mencakup ajaran dan perbuatan; iman selalu bergandengan dengan amal saleh. Amal merupakan implementasi iman. Iman tidak hanya mengarah ke langit. Iman adalah jalan yang memiliki dua arah; menjulang ke langit tapi buahnya harus nampak di bumi. Bahkan bersentuhannya iman dengan bumi merupakan syarat bagi sampainya iman ke langit, dan syarat bagi kesempurnaan iman itu sendiri. Ketiga, sikap Islam tentang hubungan dunia dan akhirat merupakan sikap yang mendorong kaum Muslim untuk selalu memadukan keduanya, tidak berpihak kepada salah satunya dengan mengorbankan yang lain (QS. Al-Qashash/28: 77). Dalam sebuah hadis dikatakan, “Yang terbaik dari kalian bukan yang meninggalkan dunia demi akhirat, bukan pula yang meninggalkan akhirat untuk dunia, tetapi yang terbaik adalah yang mengambil dari ini (dunia) dan ini (akhirat).” Keempat, dalam pandangan Al-Qur’an manusia adalah makhluk bumi. Akan tetapi, berdasarkan penciptaan dan tugasnya, manusia terhubung dengan langit. Sementara dalam jiwanya terdapat tiupan ruh Tuhan dan secercah cahaya-Nya. Pada saat yang sama ia adalah khalifah Allah di bumi. Kelima, tercapainya kemaslahatan hamba merupakan tujuan syariat. Ada atau tidak adanya syariat tergantung pada ada atau tidak adanya kemaslahatan hamba. Dari lima kenyataan ini kita dapat mengatakan bahwa sesungguhnya tidak ada garis pembatas antara hak-hak hamba dan hak-hak Allah. Islam tidak menghendaki umatnya taat secara ritual saja, tapi juga harus saleh secara sosial.
