Although eighteenth-century Viennese keyboard music, especially by such composers as Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, is among the most popular ever written, there has been surprisingly little serious research into the instruments for which it was composed. This book fills that gap. Based on evidence from primary source material, much of it previously undiscovered or neglected, Maunder traces the history and development of the various keyboard instruments available in Vienna throughout the eighteenth century--harpsichords, clavichords, and pianos--and their use by composers and performers.

Eighteenth-century pianos shaped and influenced the music that was written for them. However, although organological studies probe the instrument in ever more detail, and musical criticism focuses increasingly on the musical repertoire, the relationship between the two has not been properly examined. This book concentrates on the keyboard writing of the last third of the eighteenth century, as inspired by the fundamentally different constructions of the German/Viennese and the English pianoforte. The highly articulated languages of Mozart and his Viennese contemporaries, and the more robust, pre-romantic style of Duzzek and his London colleagues reflect the very characteristics of these respective instruments. Beyond the scrutiny of the music, attention is given also to the players. The differentiation between professionals and amateurs is addressed, and contemporary sources help provide a description of late eighteenth-century performing styles; such a survey offers new insight into the living art of the pianoforte during a most important period in its history.

Company Of Pianos written by Richard Burnett and has been published by Third Millennium Information Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Music categories.

This beautifully written history of the piano is at once remarkably informative and uniquely engaging. Performer and historian Richard Burnett traces the development of the piano from its origins to the present day, drawing on keyboard instruments from his internationally known collection, at the Finchcocks Museum in Kent, England.Sixty-one of these instruments, including organs, harpsichords, clavichords, and a wide range of pianos, feature in what amounts to a ground-breaking social history of the piano.Richard Burnett is an international concert pianist who acquired Finchcocks, the beautiful Georgian mansion in 1971 as a home for his collection. His fascinating book ingeniously interweaves the biographies of the pianos with the history of the various manufacturing firms and the remarkable lives of some of the builders and the musicians associated with them, all set against the vividly depicted social backdrop of the periods under review. In the second part of his book, the author looks particularly at how the development of the instruments has influenced the output of the classical composers - Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Weber, Schubert and others. The fast-flowing anecdotal style of the writing means that this will be of interest and entertainment to the general reader, as well as those who already have some knowledge of the subject. The book also includes a comlimentary CD, in which the music of 33 of the Finchcocks period instruments can be heard being played by Richard Burnett and Steven Devine."This is a handsome book and it makes a fine coffee-table present for any music and piano lover." John Amis - broadcaster, music presenter, performer and the 'symphony man' in the long-running radio show, 'My Music'."This book is a landmark in music."Alan Hacker, OBE - one of the world's top clarinettist's."This is the best book I have read (or heard) on the subject and recommend it highly." Rick Ohlendorf, Piano Tuners Association News"After reading Company of Pianos, I found myself playing Beethoven with a heightened awareness ... and for that alone I am grateful." Angela Hewitt, Times Literary Supplement"Anecdotal, wryly humorous and authoritative ...the text of the Company of Pianos by itself would be an essential purchase for pianophiles. But the standard to which the book has been produced is something else." Jeremy Nicholas, Piano International''Company of Pianos might have been entitled 'In the Company of Richard Burnett'.... For those who do not know him and for us all, this is a work that reveals the delightful and impassioned character of one who has done so much for the historical piano, not only as a player and a collector but also as its advocate and true restorer''. Early Music Magazine"The author takes us on a social and historical journey that is entertaining, witty, lucid and informed, but never dull or pedantic. A delight to the mind, the ears and the eyes. The Company of Pianos is good company indeed." Southern California Early Music Society"Every music school, serious pianist, library and early-music enthusiast should have this wonderful volume." Paul James Dwyer, Opus Magazine"... No music lovers, be they pianists, listeners or historians can afford to be without this fascinating and enlightening book." History Of The Piano written by Ernest Closson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1974 with Music categories.

"Ernest Closson's History of the Piano was first published in English in 1947, three years after the appearance of the original edition in French. Closson (1870-1950) was founder and director of the Museum of the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels, which boasts one of the richest collections of keyboard instruments in the world, and he was therefore well qualified to write a book on their evolution. The greater part of the work is concerned with the development of the piano itself, from the delicate instrument invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in Florence in the early years of the eighteenth century, to the sturdy modern 'grand'; but there are also chapters on related instruments such as the clavichord, the harpsichord, the virginal and the spinet. When Closson's book first appeared the subject was poorly documented and the opportunities for seeing and hearing old keyboard instruments were extremely limited, but today interest in them is widespread and they are very much more accessible (and better cared for). The issue of a revised edition of Closson's work, incorporating emendations made by the author since the publication of the French and English editions, corrections and additional material made in the light of subsequent research and documentation, a greatly expanded bibliography, and new plates and line-drawings of actions--though preserving the distinctive flavour of the original book--should therefore be most welcome. This book remains a clear and readable summary of the development and refinement of stringed keyboard instruments, valuable to anyone who has any experience at all with the piano or with its antecedents." --Dust jacket.

“Badura-Skoda addresses the place of the piano in the eighteenth century from the perspective of a scholar and performer” (Eighteenth-Century Music). In the late seventeenth century, Italian musician and inventor Bartolomeo Cristofori developed a new musical instrument—his cembalo che fa il piano e forte, which allowed keyboard players flexible dynamic gradation. This innovation, which came to be known as the hammer-harpsichord or fortepiano grand, was slow to catch on in musical circles. However, as renowned piano historian Eva Badura-Skoda demonstrates, the instrument inspired new keyboard techniques and performance practices and was eagerly adopted by virtuosos of the age, including Scarlatti, J. S. Bach, Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Presenting a rich array of archival evidence, Badura-Skoda traces the construction and use of the fortepiano grand across the musical cultures of eighteenth-century Europe, providing a valuable resource for music historians, organologists, and performers. “Badura-Skoda has written a remarkable volume, the result of a lifetime of scholarly research and investigation. . . . Essential.” —Choice
