KHAKI ALL BLACKS is a detailed account of the 1945-46 Kiwis' tour at the end of the Second World War. The tour was the brainchild of Major-General Bernard Freyberg, when the NZ Expeditionary Force was stationed in Cairo in 1940, and subsequently came under the able direction of the 'Colonel' - Colonel Allan Andrews. At the end of hostilities the Kiwis undertook an arduous tour of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, then on to France and Germany before returning home to another five games against New Zealand provincial sides before they were finally reunited with their families. In total they won 32 of the 38 games they played. The style of rugby was fast, open and highly entertaining and, in the immediate post-war era when people were starved of entertainment of any sort, was received with enthusiasm and accolades wherever they played. Once back in New Zealand, many of the team went on to become All Blacks, coaches and selectors, including great names such as Bob Scott, Fred Allen and Charlie Saxton. The book includes forewords by Bob Scott and Major General Jerry Matapare, Chief of Army, as well as comprehensive tour statistics and details on each of the players.

Rugby was played constantly during World War II by service teams. Whenever soldiers met or gathered, sport and games developed. Rugby in the armed forces was often an exuberant reaction from the stern reality of war. It was played with knee-pads on the dusty, gritty sand of the desert and on grass beside the Nile river. This is the story of rugby matches played by the 6th South African Armoured Division in Egypt, Italy and their tour of Europe.

This book examines the formation of a black cultural front by looking at the works of poet Langston Hughes, novelist Chester Himes, and cartoonist Ollie Harrington. While none of these writers were card-carrying members of the Communist Party, they all participated in the Left during their careers. Interestingly, they all turned to creating popular culture in order to reach the black masses who were captivated by movies, radio, newspapers, and detective novels. There are chapters on Hughes's "Simple" stories, Himes's detective fiction, and Harrington's "Bootsie" cartoons. Collectively, the experience of these three figures contributes to the story of a "long" movement for African American freedom that flourished during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Yet this book also stresses the impact that McCarthyism had on dismantling the Black Left and how it affected each individual involved. Each was radicalized at a different moment and for different reasons.

War Blacks is the extraordinary story of New Zealand's national sport and The Great War, and the effect each had on the other. Rugby and war have played major roles in the forging of a national New Zealand identity. This is the story of where both met, on the hot sands of Egypt and the muddy fields of Britain and France during World War I. War Blacks presents for the first time the stories of more than 90 men who had been, were, or would be All Blacks and their 1914-18 wartime service, wearing the double silver fern of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force or the badges of other nations. While first-class and senior rugby in New Zealand came to a halt as the war progressed - "fit to play, fit to fight" - the game played an important role in the recreation and morale of our troops. The mighty rivalry between the All Blacks and the Springboks can be traced to this period. When the "Invincibles" were touring the Northern Hemisphere in 1924-25, the ex-soldiers in the team made a point of visiting the battlefields they had fought on only a few years earlier, as well as the graves of their fallen comrades. Arguably the most famous of the New Zealand player-soldiers was Dave Gallaher, captain of the "Originals" All Blacks in 1905, who lost his life in 1917 at Passchendaele. He was one of 13 All Blacks killed in action during WWI. Others were wounded and left suffering the effects of active service for the rest of their lives. But amongst those who played after the war was Maurice Brownlie, one of the greatest forwards the game has seen. War Blacks is the moving - and at times humorous - story of our national sport and The Great War, and the effect each had on the other.

The Black And Tans written by D. M. Leeson and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-25 with History categories.

This is the story of the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries, the most notorious police forces in the history of the British Isles. During the Irish War of Independence (1920-1), the British government recruited thousands of ex-soldiers to serve as constables in the Royal Irish Constabulary, the Black and Tans, while also raising a paramilitary raiding force of ex-officers - the Auxiliary Division. From the summer of 1920 to the summer of 1921, these forces became the focus of bitter controversy. As the struggle for Irish independence intensified, the police responded to ambushes and assassinations by the guerrillas with reprisals and extrajudicial killings. Prisoners and suspects were abused and shot, the homes and shops of their families and supporters were burned, and the British government was accused of imposing a reign of terror on Ireland. Based on extensive archival research, this is the first serious study of the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries and the part they played in the Irish War of Independence. Dr Leeson examines the organization and recruitment of the British police, the social origins of police recruits, and the conditions in which they lived and worked, along with their conduct and misconduct once they joined the force, and their experiences and states of mind. For the first time, it tells the story of the Irish conflict from the police perspective, while casting new light on the British government's responsibility for reprisals, the problems of using police to combat insurgents, and the causes of atrocities in revolutionary wars.
