The history of humanity is about to change forever... On 5 December 1945, five TBM Avenger bombers embarked on a training mission off the coast of Florida and mysteriously vanish without a trace in the Bermuda Triangle. A PBY search and rescue plane with thirteen crewmen aboard sets out to find the Avengers . . . and never returns. In 2168, a mysterious five-sided pyramid is discovered on the ocean floor of Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa. Commander Mac O’Bryant and her team of astronauts are among the first to enter the pyramid’s central chamber. They find the body of a missing World War II pilot, whose hands clutch a journal detailing what happened to him after he and his crew were abducted by aliens and taken to a place with no recognizable stars. As the pyramid walls begin to collapse around Mac and her team, their names mysteriously appear within its pages and they find themselves lost on an alien world. Stranded with no way home, Mac decides to retrace the pilot’s steps. She never expects to find the man alive. And if the man has yet to die, what does that mean for her and the rest of her crew?

Stirling Cycle Engines written by Allan J. Organ and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Some 200 years after the original invention, internal design of a Stirling engine has come to be considered a specialist task, calling for extensive experience and for access to sophisticated computer modelling. The low parts-count of the type is negated by the complexity of the gas processes by which heat is converted to work. Design is perceived as problematic largely because those interactions are neither intuitively evident, nor capable of being made visible by laboratory experiment. There can be little doubt that the situation stands in the way of wider application of this elegant concept. Stirling Cycle Engines re-visits the design challenge, doing so in three stages. Firstly, unrealistic expectations are dispelled: chasing the Carnot efficiency is a guarantee of disappointment, since the Stirling engine has no such pretentions. Secondly, no matter how complex the gas processes, they embody a degree of intrinsic similarity from engine to engine. Suitably exploited, this means that a single computation serves for an infinite number of design conditions. Thirdly, guidelines resulting from the new approach are condensed to high-resolution design charts – nomograms. Appropriately designed, the Stirling engine promises high thermal efficiency, quiet operation and the ability to operate from a wide range of heat sources. Stirling Cycle Engines offers tools for expediting feasibility studies and for easing the task of designing for a novel application. Key features: Expectations are re-set to realistic goals. The formulation throughout highlights what the thermodynamic processes of different engines have in common rather than what distinguishes them. Design by scaling is extended, corroborated, reduced to the use of charts and fully Illustrated. Results of extensive computer modelling are condensed down to high-resolution Nomograms. Worked examples feature throughout. Prime movers (and coolers) operating on the Stirling cycle are of increasing interest to industry, the military (stealth submarines) and space agencies. Stirling Cycle Engines fills a gap in the technical literature and is a comprehensive manual for researchers and practitioners. In particular, it will support effort world-wide to exploit potential for such applications as small-scale CHP (combined heat and power), solar energy conversion and utilization of low-grade heat.

Shock Wave Engine Design written by Helmut E. Weber and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-12-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Written by an author who has devoted the past twenty-five years ofhis life to studying and designing shock wave engines, this uniquebook offers comprehensive coverage of the theory and practice ofshock wave engine design. The only book treating the completepreliminary design of shock wave engines, it provides engineerswith practical step-by-step guidelines applicable to the design andconstruction of small, light- weight, low-powered industrialturbines as well as high performance jet aircraft engines. In his discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of shockwave versus other types of combustion engines, Dr. Weberdemonstrates how and why shock wave engines can be made to workmore efficiently than conventional gas turbines. Among otherthings, he shows quantitatively why combustion temperatures can besignificantly higher in shock wave engines than conventional gasturbines. He evaluates temperatures of moving parts in terms ofcombustion and engine inlet temperatures, and explores the effectof shock coalescence, expansion fan reflections and intersectionson port sizes and locations. And throughout, real and imaginedperformance problems are posed and proven solutions given for shockwave engines--alone and in conjunction with conventional gasturbines or reciprocating internal combustion engines. Designed to function as a practical guide, Shock Wave Engine Designoffers concise step-by-step design techniques in a readily usableformat. Engineers will find precise, detailed directions on suchessentials as how to size wave rotor blade lengths and heights andthe correct rotor diameter for a specified power, and materialselection for rotor and stator. And one entire chapter (Chapter 12)is devoted exclusively to a detailed example design for a 500 hpengine. An authoritative, highly practical guide to state-of-the-art shockwave engine design, this book is an important resource formechanical and aerospace engineers who design aircraft engines orvirtually any type of turbomachinery. Timely, authoritative, practical--an important resource forengineers who design aircraft engines or virtually any type ofturbomachinery Written by a pioneer in the field, this book offers a comprehensivecoverage of state-of-the-art shock wave engine design principlesand techniques. The only book treating the complete preliminarydesign of shock wave engines, this unique guide provides engineerswith: * Concise step-by-step guidelines applicable to the design andconstruction of small, lightweight, low-powered industrial turbinesas well as high-performance jet aircraft engines * In-depth treatments of pressure exchangers, wave engines, andwave engines compounded with reciprocating IC engines * A chapter-length example design for a 500 hp engine * A brief but thorough review of all essential thermodynamics andgas dynamics needed to develop flow equations and calculationmethods
