In a remote valley near the BC-Alaska border lives a remarkable group of grizzly bears who have never learned to fear humans. When logging threatened this valley, people from all over the world joined a battle to save the bears. In 1994, their efforts paid off with the establishment of the Khutzymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, one of the world's most important protected wildlife areas. Dan Wakeman, a core member of the Save the Khutzymateen campaign, was one of only two guides licensed to take visitors into the heart of this ecological reserve. Photographer Wendy Shymanski, who worked with Dan for many years, amassed a folio of exquisite colour photographs of the bears in this special part of the world. In Fortress of the Grizzlies, these avid naturalists share what they have learned and seen during years of respectful interaction with this community of grizzlies.

The Great Bear Rainforest in truly unique location on the West Coast in Canada and it holds secret treasures not many people are aware of. One of them is The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, considered to be the best North American grizzly bear viewing experience. The protected park is located around 150 km away from Prince Rupert and only two licensed operators with their yachts are allowed to provide guided tour in this area. Visitors can spend couple of days on inflatable zodiac boat sailing thru the Sanctuary and viewing grizzly bears and black bears in their true habitat. The Khutzeymateen is home to around 50 to 60 grizzlies who call this wilderness their home. Approximately only between 350 to 400 visitors per year will get on the board of two yachts and have the opportunity of the lifetime to watch these animals. This protected park has been established in year 1994 and grizzly bears are not hunted there by human and they grow up and live there knowing that humans are not treats to them. It is understood that the regular presence of bear viewing experienced operators can result in some bears becoming tolerant to bear viewing. The habituation of bears viewing results is predictable and safe experience for both the visitors and the bears. Here is a small sample what people have to say about visiting this area: "Beyond my wildest expectations, the outstanding photo opportunities." "The trip to Khutzeymateen was unforgettable." "This was incredible 3 days of most amazing bear experience." This book will provide you with detailed information of what you can expect when visiting this part of Canada. Stunning photography is part of this book and you will find the most valuable information when visiting The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, Prince Rupert and Salmon Glacier in British Columbia and Hyder in Alaska. Talk And Log written by Jeremy Wilson and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Business & Economics categories.

For more than three decades, the fate of British Columbia’s old-growth forests has been a major source of political strife. While more than 5 million hectares of wood were being clearcut, the BC wilderness movement and forest industry supporters clashed, as they continue to do, both pressing their arguments in a variety of forums, ranging from television studios and logging road blockades to royal commission hearings and cabinet ministers’ offices. The resulting record of conflict confirms American historian Paul Hirt’s characterization of forest policy as "party an ideological issue, partly biological, partly economic, partly technical, and wholly political." Talk and Log is a comprehensive account of the rise and impact of the BC wilderness movement between 1965 and 1996. Jeremy Wilson examines the evolution of the movement’s approaches, evaluates the forest industry’s counterstrategies, and analyzes the patterns and trends underlying shifts in provincial government forest, environment, and parks policies. He describes the "war in the woods" triggered by environmentalists’ efforts to preserve areas such as South Moresby and the Carmanah Valley, and considers the complex forces that pushed the government to expand the protected areas system. Wilson’s perceptive analysis of Social Credit’s failed policies of the 1980s is followed by an assessment of the Harcourt NDP government’s reform iniatives, including the Commission on Resources and Environment (CORE) and the Forest Practices Code. Talk and Log is based on a variety of sources, including government documents, environmental group briefs, and interviews with several dozen politicians, government officials, environmentalists, and forest industry leaders. This book deftly illuminates the forces behind controversies that have divided British Columbians and drawn the attention of people around the world. It is also a thought-provoking examination of issues likely to dominate political debates in BC for decades to come.

This book depicts the west coast of British Columbia in all its glory. The distinctive peeling bark on the trunk of an arbutus tree. Towering Sitka spruce trees. Migrating sandpipers in Clayoquot Sound. A grizzly bear feeding on pink salmon near Knight Inlet Lodge. Author/photographer Chris Cheadle walked the streams of the rainforests, kayaked to remote beaches, sailed the inlets, explored the islands and listened to the wisdom of First Nations elders to capture these striking images.

Elephant Crossing. Houdini Needles. Miniskirt, Tickletoeteaser Tower, and Why Not Mountain. These are just some of the many names of places, rivers, mountains, and lakes that you will come across in the newest edition of British Columbia Place Names. This classic which, in its various editions, has sold over 29,000 copies, covers about 2,500 geographical features, cities, towns, and smaller communities in the province. The book abounds with fascinating historical facts, stories, and remarkable characters involved with the names of towns, cities, rivers, lakes, mountains, and islands. The selection was determined by the geographical importance of the feature as well as story of the naming. In the introduction the authors deal with the stages by which B.C. acquired its place names, the history of research into those names, and the categories into which they fall. The latter range from the honorific and commemorative to the comic and disrespectful. Aboriginal names receive particular attention. The location of each place is clearly indicated and the text is accompanied by detailed maps. Brief biographical accounts of persons with places named after them as well as an abundance of anecdotes make this a fascinating book for browsers and an invaluable resource for historians.

Bears written by Kevin Van Tighem and has been published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Nature categories.

Fear of bears seems almost to be part of what it is to be human. Our species emerged out of the depths of time into a world already populated by these great carnivores. Before we mastered iron and later developed firearms, we had few defences against bears--only watchful caution and elaborate ceremonies and sacrifices to ward off fear. Where human populations grow, bears have traditionally dwindled or disappeared. But when we return to the wild, to places where bears still survive, all our primeval fears awaken again. The risk of an automobile accident on the way to bear country far outstrips the risk of a close-range encounter with a bear, but it's the bear that worries us as we hurtle down the pavement at a hundred kilometres an hour. In this timely and sensitive book, Kevin Van Tighem calls on decades of experience, knowledge and understanding in order to enlighten readers about our relationship with and attitude toward bears. Along the way we are confronted with the realities confronting these great animals as a result of our ever-expanding human population and their ever-shrinking natural habitat. Through historical research, field observation, practical advice, personal anecdotes and an array of stunning photos, Van Tighem has written a comprehensive book that is meant to demystify bears in order to promote a deeper understanding of these powerful yet vulnerable creatures.
