In a remote valley near the BC-Alaska border lives a remarkable group of grizzly bears who have never learned to fear humans. When logging threatened this valley, people from all over the world joined a battle to save the bears. In 1994, their efforts paid off with the establishment of the Khutzymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, one of the world's most important protected wildlife areas. Dan Wakeman, a core member of the Save the Khutzymateen campaign, was one of only two guides licensed to take visitors into the heart of this ecological reserve. Photographer Wendy Shymanski, who worked with Dan for many years, amassed a folio of exquisite colour photographs of the bears in this special part of the world. In Fortress of the Grizzlies, these avid naturalists share what they have learned and seen during years of respectful interaction with this community of grizzlies.

Grizzly Bear Science And The Art Of A Wilderness Life written by Bruce McLellan and has been published by Rocky Mountain Books Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-07 with categories.

In all scientific disciplines, there is an expanding gap between what is known by the general public and what is known by scientists. In this book, Dr. Bruce McLellan tries to bridge that gap. Coexisting with grizzly bears into the future will be an increasing challenge and require a deep understanding of these large carnivores and what factors make their populations tick. Based on perhaps the longest uninterrupted wildlife research project done by one individual, this is the intertwined story of the science underlying our understanding of grizzly bears and family life in the wilderness while following bears. The story of grizzly bear behaviour and ecology is based on dozens of research papers published in this study, which in turn are based on the actual lives of over 200 radio-collared bears. These chapters are not written "for dummies" but contain considerable substance for people interested in the science behind animal ecology and conservation. The scientific chapters cover topics ranging from the bears' diet and how it influences changes in body fat and muscle, to how bears are counted and factors that influence births and deaths and regulate population size. Mixed among the science chapters is the story of how a couple in their mid-20s began the Flathead grizzly project, built a log cabin on the bank of the Flathead River, had babies, and raised them in the wilderness among bears, wolves, and mountain lions. They endured floods that washed away part of their camp, forest fires that burned thousands of square miles, and some very weird people. Both children grew up with grizzly bears and eventually earned their own M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in the ecology of these amazing animals.

Ecology And Management Of Sitka Spruce written by N. Merle Peterson and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-01 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Sitka spruce, the largest of the world's spruces, is an important component of British Columbia's coastal forests. Its ecology gives it a special place in the sustainable management of the province's forests. However, in west coast forestry it is poorly known in comparison with its main coniferous companions -- Douglas-fir, western redcedar, and western hemlock. As an important international forestry resource, it is crucial that Sitka spruce -- its ecology and the ecosystems in which it occurs -- be clearly understood by those who are involved with its management.

Aquatic Dicotyledons of North America: Ecology, Life History, and Systematics brings together a wealth of information on the natural history, ecology, and systematics of North American aquatic plants. Most books on aquatic plants have a taxonomic focus and are intended primarily for identification. Instead, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the biology of major aquatic species by compiling information from numerous sources that lie scattered among the primary literature, herbarium databases, and other reference materials. Included dicotyledon species are those having an obligate (OBL) wetland status, a designation used in the USACE National Wetland Plant List. Recent phylogenetic analyses are incorporated and rationale is provided for interpreting this information with respect to species relationships. This diverse assemblage of information will be useful to a wide range of interests including academic researchers, wildlife managers, students, and virtually anyone interested in the natural history of aquatic and wetland plants. Although focusing specifically on North America, the cosmopolitan distribution of many aquatic plants should make this an attractive text to people working virtually anywhere outside of the region as well. This book is an essential resource for assisting with wetland delineation.

The protected park is located around 150 km away from Prince Rupert and only two licensed operators with their yachts are allowed to provide guided tour in this area. Visitors can spend couple of days on inflatable zodiac boat sailing thru the Sanctuary and viewing grizzly bears and black bears in their true habitat. Approximately only between 350 to 400 visitors per year will get on the board of two yachts and have the opportunity of the lifetime to watch these animals. This protected park has been established in year 1994 and grizzly bears are not hunted there by human and they grow up and live there knowing that humans are not treats to them. It is understood that the regular presence of bear viewing experienced operators can result in some bears becoming tolerant to bear viewing. The habituation of bears viewing results is predictable and safe experience for both the visitors and the bears. Here is a small sample what people have to say about visiting this area: "Beyond my wildest expectations, the outstanding photo opportunities." "The trip to Khutzeymateen was unforgettable." What Bears Teach Us written by Sarah Elmeligi and has been published by Rocky Mountain Books Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-16 with Nature categories.

Now available in paperback, this lavishly illustrated book explores the complex behavioural characteristics of North America's largest land carnivores by examining the bear-human relationship from the bear's perspective. From the first moment Sarah Elmeligi came eye to eye with a grizzly bear, her life changed. In a moment that lasted mere seconds, she began to question everything she thought she knew about bears. How could this docile creature be the same one with a fearsome reputation for vicious attacks? Through years of research, Elmeligi grew to appreciate that bears are so much more than data points, stunning photos, and sensational online stories. Elmeligi expertly weaves the science of bear behaviour with her passionate account of personal encounters. Dive into the life of a bear biologist as Sarah's colleagues recount their own "stories from the field" - intimate moments with bears where they were connected to an animal with personality, decision-making capabilities, and a host of engaging behaviours. Join Elmeligi and Marriott on a journey that examines and shares the behaviour of black, grizzly, and polar bears in North America in a way you've never seen before. What Bears Teach Us will surprise you, inspire you, foster your curiosity, and teach you something new about bears and maybe even yourself.
