"The superheroines of the theater are back—and better and bolder than ever."— Backstage "These plays have been developed and vetted for artistic excellence; they just happen to possess the added bonus of representing a voice that's currently being underproduced. It's part of a larger movement to say: There's an embarrassment of riches here."— Sheila Callaghan for the Kilroys Not your typical book of monologues, this new collection embodies the mission of the Kilroys, an advocacy group founded in 2013 to raise awareness for the underutilized work of female and trans* playwrights. The collection is comprised of ninety-nine monologues, each from a different play off "The List" from 2014 and 2015, featuring the most unproduced (or under-produced), yet highest-recommended, plays by women in the United States. The monologues selected for this volume serve to highlight the talents of these writers in a wide array of pieces that vary in genre, style, and gender. As it says on their website, the Kilroys "Make Trouble and Plays." The Kilroys are a gang of playwrights and producers in Los Angeles, California, who advocate for the visibility of women playwrights in theatre. Founded in 2013, the Kilroys are named after the iconic graffiti tag "Kilroy Was Here" that was first left by WWII soldiers in unexpected places, a playfully subversive way of making their presence known. The members include Zakiyyah Alexander, Bekah Brunstetter, Sheila Callaghan, Carla Ching, Annah Feinberg, Sarah Gubbins, Laura Jacqmin, Joy Meads, Kelly Miller, Meg Miroshnik, Daria Polatin, Tanya Saracho, and Marisa Wegrzyn.

Bad Girls And Transgressive Women In Popular Television Fiction And Film written by Julie Chappell and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-03 with Social Science categories.

This collection of essays focuses on the representations of a variety of “bad girls”—women who challenge, refuse, or transgress the patriarchal limits intended to circumscribe them—in television, popular fiction, and mainstream film from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Perhaps not surprisingly, the initial introduction of women into Western cultural narrative coincides with the introduction of transgressive women. From the beginning, for good or ill, women have been depicted as insubordinate. Today’s popular manifestations include such widely known figures as Lisbeth Salander (the “girl with the dragon tattoo”), The Walking Dead’s Michonne, and the queen bees of teen television series. While the existence and prominence of transgressive women has continued uninterrupted, however, attitudes towards them have varied considerably. It is those attitudes that are explored in this collection. At the same time, these essays place feminist/postfeminist analysis in a larger context, entering into ongoing debates about power, equality, sexuality, and gender.

"They told you that you need to be thin and beautiful. They told you to wear longer skirts, avoid going out late at night, and move in groups. Wear shoes you can run in more easily than heels. Dress to flatter your apple, pear, hourglass figure, but don't look like a slut. They said if you're strong or opinionated, you'll be shrill, bossy, a ballbreaker. They said 'That's not for girls,' 'Take it as a compliment,' 'Don't rock the boat.' They told you 'Beauty is on the inside,' but you knew they didn't really mean it. Well screw that. I'm here to tell you something else. Everyday Sexism Project founder Laura Bates mocks the ludicrous pressures and stereotypes faced by young women today. Hilarious, bold, and unapologetic, Girl Up sets the record straight."--Back cover.

Three Seventeenth Century Plays On Women And Performance written by Hero Chalmers and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-19 with Literary Criticism categories.

This is a ground-breaking edition of three seventeenth-century plays that all engage in diverse and exciting ways with questions of gender and performance. The collection, edited by three pioneering scholars of elite female culture and early modern drama, makes the texts of three much-discussed plays - John Fletcher's The Wild-Goose Chase, James Shirley's The Bird in a Cage and Margaret Cavendish's The Convent of Pleasure - available together in a full scholarly edition for the first time. The Wild Goose Chase (1621) and The Bird in a Cage (1633) were both performed in the commercial London theatres in the Jacobean and Caroline periods respectively. The Convent of Pleasure (1668) is a so-called 'closet' drama, designed primarily for reading but drawing on a tradition of aristocratic theatricals. In a wide-ranging co-authored introduction to the volume, the editors explore the concerns of these playtexts in relation to contemporary debates surrounding popular festivity and anti-theatricalism, as well as the agency of elite female culture in the Stuart period and the emergence of the professional female actor in the Restoration. The volume will be an invaluable teaching and research tool for students and scholars of early modern drama, women's writing and performance studies more generally, as well as providing a rich sourcebook for the reader interested in seventeenth-century theatrical culture.

Women S Work written by Courtney Thorsson and has been published by University of Virginia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with Literary Criticism categories.

In Women’s Work, Courtney Thorsson reconsiders the gender, genre, and geography of African American nationalism as she explores the aesthetic history of African American writing by women. Building on and departing from the Black Arts Movement, the literary fiction of such writers as Toni Cade Bambara, Paule Marshall, Gloria Naylor, Ntozake Shange, and Toni Morrison employs a cultural nationalism—practiced by their characters as "women's work"—that defines a distinct contemporary literary movement, demanding attention to the continued relevance of nation in post–Black Arts writing. Identifying five forms of women's work as organizing, dancing, mapping, cooking, and inscribing, Thorsson shows how these writers reclaimed and revised cultural nationalism to hail African America.
