Everything is going smoothly until a typical convoy sortie in the Iraqi desert turns Craig’s world into a nightmare. Ambushed by a large, well-armed and organised enemy force, Craig and his colleagues are taken prisoner by Saddam’s henchmen. Thrust into a nether world of pain and brutality, all of his thoughts and efforts become focussed on one thing: staying alive. Disarming a bomb would soon come to seem like child’s play, as Craig has to draw on every shred of his mental and physical strength to endure the horrific daily torture at the hands of his captors. He constantly dreams of escape, but will they break him first?

When John Shular died in 1996, his family found a diary detailing the fifty missions he had flown as a bombardier aboard a B-17 in the Second World War. He spoke to no one of the diary during his life. In Fifty Missions over Europe, Shulars family shares this diary that offers unique insight into the brutal and terrifying lives of the American airmen who fought and won the air war over Europe. The diary begins in July of 1944 in Foggia, Italy, when Shular flew his first bombing flight, a time when aircrews faced an 89 percent casualty rate. He completed his fiftieth mission December 9, 1944. With photos included, the diary is presented here exactly as Shular penned it. Footnotes have been added to the text to explain abbreviations, technical jargon, and instances where the text may be unclear. Shular retired from the air corps after twenty years of service in 1963 and taught high school science and business for fifteen years in Southwick, Massachusetts.

This volume presents the results of the Neural Information Processing Systems Competition track at the 2018 NeurIPS conference. The competition follows the same format as the 2017 competition track for NIPS. Out of 21 submitted proposals, eight competition proposals were selected, spanning the area of Robotics, Health, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Systems and Physics. Competitions have become an integral part of advancing state-of-the-art in artificial intelligence (AI). They exhibit one important difference to benchmarks: Competitions test a system end-to-end rather than evaluating only a single component; they assess the practicability of an algorithmic solution in addition to assessing feasibility. The eight run competitions aim at advancing the state of the art in deep reinforcement learning, adversarial learning, and auto machine learning, among others, including new applications for intelligent agents in gaming and conversational settings, energy physics, and prosthetics.
