Die Zahnradgetriebe meiner Kindheit Noch ehe ich zweiJahre alt war, hatte ich eine intensive Be ziehung zu Autos entwickelt. Die Namen der Autoteile bildeten einen betdichtlichen Teil meines Vokabulars: Besonders stolz war ich darauf, die Teile des Getriebes zu kennen, die Gangschaltung und insbesondere das Differential. Natiirlich verstand ich erst viele Jahre spater, wie eine Gangschaltung funktioniert; aber als ich es einmal begriffen hatte, wurde das Spielen mit Zahnradge trieben me in liebster Zeitvertreib. Ich liebte es, runde Gegenstan de wie Zahnrader umeinander kreisen zu lassen, und natiirlich war mein erstes Baukastenprojekt eine primitive Gangschaltung. Ich wurde recht geschickt darin, im Geiste Rader zu bewegen und Ketten von Ursache und Wirkung zu konstruieren: {laquo}Dieses dreht sich so 'rum, also muB sich das da so 'rum drehen, also ... {raquo} Be sonderes Vergniigen bereiteten mir Systeme wie das Differential getriebe, die keiner einfachen linearen Kausalkette folgen, da die Bewegung im Schalthebel auf viele verschiedene Arten auf die Rader iibertragen werden kann, je nach dem welchem Wider stand die Rader begegnen. Ich kann mich lebhaft an meine Aufre gung erinnern, als ich entdeckte, daB ein System regelgerecht und vollig verstandlich sein konnte, ohne strikt deterministisch zu sein.

“Scientific Studies on the Work of the ‘Haus der kleinen Forscher’ Foundation” is a regularly published series of scientific reports authored by distinguished experts from the field of early education. This series serves to pursue professional dialogue between the Foundation, academia and practice, with the aim of lending sound support to all child-care centres, after-school care centres and primary schools in Germany in their educational mission. This ninth volume of the series, with a foreword by Ilan Chabay, deals with the goals and requirements of computer science education in the elementary and primary sector. In their expert report, Nadine Bergner, Hilde Köster, Johannes Magenheim, Kathrin Müller, Ralf Romeike, Ulrik Schroeder and Carsten Schulte specify the pedagogical and content-related goal dimensions of computer science education at child-care centres and primary schools. In addition to establishing a theoretical basis for various goal dimensions, the authors discuss the success criteria for effective and efficient early computer science education in practice. They also provide recommendations for the further development of the Foundation’s offerings and scientific accompaniment of the work of the Foundation in the field of computer science. In their expert recommendation, Nadine Bergner and Kathrin Müller describe a selection of informatics systems for children at child-care centres and primary schools and offer suggestions for particularly suitable systems and their use in elementary and primary education based on professional criteria. Nicht nur, ,neue Lebenschancen" vermittle der Computer, versprach Bun desbildungsministerin Dorothee Wilms im März 1984; auf jener repräsenta blen Veranstaltung von Politik, WIrtschaft und Wissenschaft, bei der zweck dienlich die Fördergemeinschaft "Computer + Bildung" ins Leben gerufen und der Computer der gesamten bildungspolitischen Öffentlichkeit nach drücklich anempfohlen wurde, konnten offenbar die Versprechungen nicht hoch genug angesetzt werden. Vielmehr "vermittle er auch neue pädagogi sche Chancen", und sei es am Ende auch (nur) die, "den Blick dafür (zu) schärfen, wie bewundernswert die letztlich doch allen elektronischen und ap parativen Instrumenten überlegene Fähigkeit menschlichen Denkens und wertorientierten Handeins ist!" Freilich unzweifelhaft ist: einem breiten pädagogischen Bedarf oder Drang gehorchte die rasche Verbreitung und Verwendung des Computers in vielen Lernfeldern, vor allem in den Schulen, nicht; im Gegenteil: ein Großteil, wohl (bis heute) die Mehrheit der Pädagogen betrachtet ihn mit unverhohlener Skepsis, sei es aus begründeter Ablehnung einer ständig fortschreitenden, sich noch beschleunigenden Technisierung sämtlicher Lebensbereiche, sei es infolge mangelnder Kenntnisse seiner technischen Beschaffenheit und seiner didaktischen Potentiale; allenfalls eine Minderheit befürwortet ihn uneinge schränkt, lobt seine Vorzüge für das Lernen und nutzt ihn unerschrocken. Gleichwohl wird sein Siegeszug nicht aufzuhalten sein, dafür sorgen Wirt schaft und Politik mit einträchtiger Macht. Als Konsumartikel erlebte der Computer, in seiner handlichen Spielart als sog. Home-oder Personalcomputer, erstmals zu Weihnachten 1983 einen Ver kaufserfolg: Ca. 215 ()()() Geräte wurden wider Erwarten auf einen Schlag ab gesetzt; die Branche meldete stolz geleerte Läger.
