1949 gründete Hermann Gmeiner in Imst im österreichischen Tirol das erste SOS-Kinderdorf. Waren es in dieser Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg anfangs in einem nicht unerheblichen Umfang Waisenkinder, die in einem SOS-Kinderdorf lebten, sind es heute meist Kinder und Jugendliche aus schwierigen Familienverhältnissen, die Unterstützung und Förderung erfahren. Heute gibt es weltweit in 138 Ländern Kinderdörfer, Jugendwohngemeinschaften, Schulen, Berufsausbildungszentren und familienstärkende Angebote. Hanjo Sauer hat seit seiner Begegnung mit Hermann Gmeiner über mehrere Jahrzehnte hauptamtlich und ehrenamtlich in unterschiedlichen Funktionen die Entwicklung der SOS-Kinderdörfer begleitet. Hier beschreibt er seine Erfahrungen.
