In den Handlungsfeldern der öffentlichen und freien Jugendhilfe stellen Kinder und Jugendliche mit auffälligem oder sozial unangemessenem Verhalten eine Herausforderung für die Betreuungskräfte dar. Mit diesem Handbuch möchten die Autorinnen und Autoren dazu beitragen, die Kooperation zwischen Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie und Psychotherapie und Jugendhilfe zu intensivieren und den gemeinsamen Dialog zu fördern. Neben einer Beschreibung der häufigsten kinder- und jugendpsychiatrischen Störungen, von ihren Entstehungsbedingungen und ihrem Verlauf werden Möglichkeiten dargestellt, wie die medizinischen und therapeutischen Erfordernisse auch im pädagogischen Alltag Berücksichtigung finden können. Medizinische Vorkenntnisse sind zum Verständnis des Buches nicht notwendig. Es wendet sich vor allem an Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der (teil-)stationären Jugendhilfe. Aber auch Personen aus anderen Handlungsfeldern von Sozialer Arbeit und Pädagogik können in ihrer Arbeit mit psychisch auffälligen Kindern, Jugendlichen und deren Familien davon profitieren, insbesondere Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der Jugendämter, der ambulanten Jugendhilfe, der Kindertagesstätten und Schulen.

This book covers a curriculum of topics for treating patients with co-occurring intellectual disabilities and mental illness, better known as dual diagnosis (DD). Though these patients represent approximately three percent of the population, they are largely underserved due to a huge gap in the literature and limited training on this topic among non-psychiatric practitioners. They are often medically fragile and have co-occurring seizure disorders and other neurologic conditions, frequently presenting to psychiatrists with behavior problems when in fact they have undiagnosed, under-diagnosed or undertreated medical conditions.
